- GetawayAddict103 contributionsA very welcoming nature reserveWe had a most enjoyable visit to Hickling Broad Nature Reserve, despite the showery weather. The views are lovely, the staff most welcoming, and there is plenty of wildlife to see and hear. Shop, loos, car parking, picnic benches - everything you need for a few hours in the wild.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 1, 2024
- bill sLondon, United Kingdom127 contributionsHickling Broads Nature ReserveI walked in from Sutton and it’s a fairly long walk. The visitor centre was disappointing and not as big as I expected but the interpretation boards inside and out give useful information. There are toilets behind the building. My main reason for going was to take the electric boat trip through the narrow and winding reedbeds and it was great! David the boat skipper/guide was extremely knowledgeable about this area, the wildlife and conservation aspects and management issues. The other people on the boat were friendly and good company though not being familiar with the British birds having visited from Australia 🇦🇺 I did feel at a disadvantage. We landed to climb an amazing tower to a high viewing platform and the views were excellent. I left the group here to walk the Weavers Way into Potter Heigham; the path was overgrown in places but a good walk by the river and through woodland areas.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 30, 2024
- localgirl52 contributionsNorfolk Wildlife Trust Hickling Broad Boat TourWe took the two hour electric boat trip from Norfolk Wildlife Trust Hickling Broad Visitor Centre. It is a very peaceful, friendly, scenic and informative experience. John is a brilliant tour leader, extremely knowledgeable about conservation. It’s also a beautiful way to see some of the Broads. On the trip you visit a private hide only accessible by boat and go up a viewing tower. This is a fabulous trip, not to be missed but you need to book a day or so ahead as each trip only takes 12 passengers. Staff all warm and welcoming in the visitor centre which is small but perfectly formed. Well done NWT for a hugely enjoyable, fun and educational experience!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2024

This is a beautiful place with a NWT visitor centre, picnic area and toilets. It cost ÂŁ5 to enter the reserve but it's well worth the money despite the hides and some paths being closed due to Covid restrictions. The paths are easy to walk on and well sign posted. The viewing area is comfortable and the views are amazing. We sat there for a considerable amount of time simply taking in the view. As we walked further on we suddenly came upon a small herd of stunning wild horses which graze on the reserve. It's definitely a holiday must do. One word of warning though. The roads to the reserve are very narrow and bendy but there are passing points. You just have to be aware of traffic that might be coming towards you.

We intended to walk in the wildlife centre but saw a boat trip about to depart and decided to go on it instead. I am so very glad we did. The trip which lasted about an hour, was excellent. We were all given lifejackets and the man in charge of the boat, Jim, took the boat gently around the very large Hickling broad, stopping en route at two hides, where my son and his wife enjoyed seeing the wide variety of birds. As we cruised, Jim answered our many questions about the Broad and its wildlife and made the trip very interesting. My sister is disabled and uses an electric scooter but she was able to leave the scooter at the landing stage and was helped onto the boat - so the trip was a rare treat for her.

We visited the Norfolk Wildlife Trust sight as part of their butterfly day. It gives you the chance to see the rare Swallowtail butterfly which is beautiful.
A lovely boat trip is available also for an extra charge but you need to book in advance, a very enjoyable experience. There are a number of walks and hides to visit in order to check out the abundant wildlife as well as a very good shop and picnic area

Beautiful walk around the nature reserve, very friendly and helpful staff at the visitor centre, all of whom really love what they do. Walk was lovely, well set up and marked, we saw lots of wildlife, fauna and butterflies. The views of the broad from the hides and viewpoints are also stunning. One of the most peaceful places to visit and the highlight of our holiday away.

Our evening boat trip from the Norfolk Wildlife Trust visitor centrewas magical. Gliding through narrow channels in the reeds to the open broad. Initially it was a warm and then the sun went down and a full moon reflected in the water, quiet and still except for bird song. John was a really good leader and all our questions were answered. We learnt so much about the history and present conservation. We saw spoonbills, egrets ,godwits, marsh harrier and lots of other birds from the 2 hides only accessible by boat. We also saw flowers and insects in the Reed beds and a swallowtail caterpillar hiding on its favourite food milk parsley. A really special experience. I highly recommend it

The two-hour Norfolk Wildlife boat trip on 26 July was our best Norfolk boat trip, and we did a lot! Amazing bird hides, saw avocets, terns, spoonbills, grebes. Climbed up a vertiginous tower with views across the landscape (optional!). Walking trails through the reserve and excellent modern visitor centre and picnic area, and ample parking. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. Only regret that we did not have time on our holiday to return and spend another day here. Need to book boat trips in advance.

We visited Hickling Broad several times during our short holiday in the area. It is a good place to find birds, butterflies and dragonflies. Despite the weather not being wonderful we still had some very good sightings. Sadly we missed the Swallowtail butterflies so we hope to visit again in the future.

On arrival to the visitors centre me and my partner were met with a volunteer coming out of the centre who said the staff inside would help us. A male member of staff opened the door leaving myself and partner standing in the rain. When asked about the wildlife boat trips we were told the first one may not be on and to get to the boat its a 15 minute walk which myself and my partner were unable to do which he just replied well that's your answer. We felt because of our disabilities he just wasn't interested in helping us at all shut door and went chatting to about five other members of staff inside. We were very disappointed with the treatment we received from the centre discrimination due to our disabilities very sad

Hi, Is it easy to find the picnic area once we have parked? We are booked on the 2hr boat trip and don't want to be late!
Many thanks

How do I get there by public transport?
Written January 11, 2016
I am not sure, but the reserve is within walking distance of the village of Hickling. I would think there will be buses from Cromer or Yarmouth.
