Easy to find, park and buy tickets for the train ride weaving up the steep mountainside. As a family, make sure you buy the Family Card passes (30CHF each child) to make any other travel free for the kids. The circular walking routes along the ridge are the highlight having amazing views - rocky, steep and slippery in places, with some ladders. Restaurant next to the station was excellent value (for Switzerland) for coffee and cake, with a birds eye view over the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Schynige Platte is one of the classic mountain lookouts in Switzerland with 13000 ft. plus mountain peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in full and glorious view. It is accessed via a cog railway, which was opened in 1893, that departs from Wilderswil and then winds upward for about an hour with spectacular views of lakes Tuhn and Brienz. The views on the journey up are fantastic, but those at the top are breathtaking. There are also multiple trails and hikes you can take and, although we had no plans to go on any major hikes, we did walk along the ridge on one of the trails. Over the ridge, we were treated to having a peaceful encounter with a mountain goat which was leisurely grazing by the trail. It was both a surprise and the highlight of our day. I also got a great picture of my daughter and granddaughter in the double sun lounger chairs at the start of the trail. There is both a hotel and restaurant at Schynige Platte. The restaurant has an outside terrace with plenty of seating and a beautiful view. We ate at the self-serve cafeteria section of the restaurant and, while it was a little expensive, the food was very good. Another attraction for nature lovers is the botanical alpine garden with 650 different alpine plants. For kids, there is also a rather nice playground. On the day we visited, Schynige Platte was very quiet and peaceful as it gave us the magical views of the mountains and alpine valleys.

Hiked the Panorama route of 6+ km, unfortunately we hiked it counterclockwise and felt the views would have been better clockwise keeping Interlaken and the lakes as well as the Alps to our front. The views were fantastic and the trails were well maintained. Half way through the hike you have the opportunity to climb a tall rock mass to get a panoramic view. This was the toughest part of the hike.
The train ride up and back down takes about an hour each way and the hike was a little under 3-hrs.

The train is quaint, and the views amazing (we did the Panoramaweg walk, which actually is not for the faint of heart). However the train is quite small and slow (a fast walking pace), so it takes a good 50 minutes to make the trip each way.

Even in the middle of the week in the off season, it was crowded. Everyone is loaded into the quite small carriage with bench seating, so you have to snuggle up. Even though everyone was wearing a mask, being in a small airless carriage with 30 or so other people didn't feel safe. In fact the folks next to us objected to being asked to board the train with so many people, but since the train is the only way down other than walking, they had no choice. In fact, they got off half way down, presumably to walk the rest of the way.

They should really put the train to at least half capacity. I'd avoid this experience until Covid is no longer an issue.

At long last one of my wishes came true and was able to complement my previous experiences from the fantastic Jungfrau region.
We enjoyed a fantastic old fashioned and slow ride up the mountain, the views are simply breath taking - any time of the year.
We very much enjoyed the approx. 2 walk / hike, and proper hiking boots are much recommended. The altitude should be well considered and take it easy / slowly to best enjoy the day.

We had a magnificent trip on the train to the station at the top. It was so gods that we did it twice in our 10 day holiday based in Wilderswil. On a hot summer day the climate at the top was just right. There are great walks and an excellent restaurant which is both self service or with full table service.

The Schynige Platte is an area at an altitude of about 2000 meters which can be reached by an historical train ride from Wilderswil. The ride is expensive, slow and not all that comfortable, but worth it! The views over the Interlaken valley with the Thunersee and the Brienzersee are unsurpassed! The panoramic hike was regrettably still closed due to snow but the hike to the top of the Daube was also great. There is a restaurant and hotel, and a garden with Alp flowers as well.

On our trip to interlaken we decided on a trip to schynige platte We started on our trip from interlaken west bahnhof ,near interlaken west train station .We boarded bus number105 to wilderswil frequency twice an hour (22minutes and 52minutes on the hour ) Took about 10 mins to reach wilderswil
The bus stops just outside Migros supermarket from where one can pick up sandwiches ,drinks ,fruits for picnic at schynige platte. We then took cogwheel train up to schynige platte from wilderswil station across the road from migros Trip up took about 40 mins and was scenic
When we reached the schynigge platte station we were welcomed by Alp horn music being played .We found a nice little place for our picnic and then visited the hotel nearby for coffee and desserts .From terrace of this hotel you get fantastic views of eiger ,monch ,and jungfraujoch .You also get views of interlaken town between lake thun and brienze .Lot of trails around to hike
This whole trip from interlaken west to wilderswil to schynige platte was free on swisstravel pass

Alpine Garden is located in Schynige Platte which is the Mountain region in Switzerland.

I’ve read a lot about Alpine Garden and Schynige Platte region and last year was the chance to visit the place and again this year. It is natural garden where is really you will feel and live the clean environment.

How to reach the place:

I was staying in Interlaken and from there you need only 5 minutes drive to Wilderswil town where the Schynige Platte Railway station located then you take the classic train to the top of the summit of Schynige Platte which only 15 minutes and you will really enjoy the journey specially if you have young kids because the journey is amazing. By the way, if you have time before you take the train don’t miss walking around Wilderswil Town which is really nice old town.

On the top of the summit where the Alpine garden is located you will enjoy the hiking over there beside that your kids will enjoy the nice playground with the spectacular views of the area where you can see both lakes surrounding Interlaken which is Thunersee and Brienzersee.

Please don’t miss it, it is highly recommended by me.

Wonderful Experience in Switzerland

Best Regards,

M. Alowais

The Schynige Platte is accessed by a cute, rather old fashioned train. The price of the train was a shock to us at first, however it is worth looking on the rail company's website for promotional offers. We saved 50% simply by "liking" their Facebook page (it was still about £23 each return, so any discount is very welcome). The train ride itself, although not the most comfortable (tip - the train with the open sides we caught on the way back down had blankets over the wooden benches, that made them a bit more comfortable, so if you have a choice of trains, go for that one). It travels first through woodlands, then you get views of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, then once the train has travelled through the mountain you get to the really spectacular scenery, with spectacular views of the Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau.

The first half of the train journey, the views (especially of the lakes) are better if you sit on the left. Once you've gone through the mountain though and get to the stage where you can see the Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau, the views are better if you are sat on the right.

There are various hikes you can do at the top, and depending on your fitness levels, it is definitely worth doing them as the views at the top are even better. We took the Panoramaweg, which took about an hour, give or take (we did a lot of stopping to enjoy the views and take photos).

General consensus is apparently that you get up there early, as cloud cover often comes in later in the day. We heeded this advice. We stopped for a late afternoon beer on the terrace of the hotel at the top by the train station; probably the most spectacular "beer garden" view you will ever see, and cloud cover was starting to come in, but by this stage we'd had plenty of time to enjoy the view and watching the clouds advancing up the mountains and gradually encircling them was actually quite hypnotic in its own way.

We went at the start of Autumn. The weather was still sunny, and at times warm enough to not even require a jumper. Given that part of the Schynige Platte area is labelled "Alpengarten Schynige Platte", a big part of the appeal for many people would be the Alpine flowers. Although there were a few still hanging on whilst we were there, most had gone by then (early October). The leaves starting to turn autumnal in colour is however a pretty sight in its own right, and as such I would still recommend visiting at this time of year.
