- Daniel PVancouver, Canada154 contributionsInsane beautyWas really one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life. After you get up on the cogwheel train and then you start walking to where they have the Alpine garden and then you just look around at the Alpine pasture it's just insanely beautiful. I come from Canada where we have a lot of beautiful mountains as well but they're not as accessible as in Switzerland. In Switzerland they have trains or cable cars that go right up most of the mountains which makes them very accessible. I highly recommend this trip on the old fashioned cogwheel train.Thank you so much for your visit and we are really happy that you enjoy everything. - Arthur MHamilton, Canada1,628 contributionsWent up just for the Alphorn experience, and it was all worth it!Known as the Top of Swiss Tradition, Schynige Platte lived up to its nickname since I witnessed an alphorn concert here. The ascent was pretty slow, but honestly, it made me relax my mind a little since I had tight scheduling within the area. The railway had great views of the lakes and the city of Interlaken below! At the top, I hiked a little and of course since it was October, the plants are mostly dead. While hiking I heard the sound I was looking for, the alphorn was playing! Was curious where the sound came from, and upon going down the hill, I saw this couple dragging their alphorns and I felt bad asking if they could play the alphorn just for me. They accepted it without any hesitations, and they played two songs and passersby stopped over and stayed awhile. At the end, several people gave them tips, and so did I. They deserve it. They played it so well it gave goosebumps on me especially they played the alphorn with the Swiss Alps on the background. Nothing can get more Swiss than that!Thank you so much for your visit and wonderful recommodation. Use the Swiss half price pass to take advantage of a slight discount. There are bathrooms and some restaurants at the top. Many different hikes to choose from- we did #2 Panoramic Obergberhorn loop. Took us 3 hours with several long stops for pics. There are other family friendly trails as well. Glorious views of both lakes below and the surrounding alps, including the top of Europe Jungfraujoch. It's not a cheap experience but once in your life, something you must do if you enjoy nature & fantastic mountain views.Thank you for the visit. The train is quaint, and the views amazing (we did the Panoramaweg walk, which actually is not for the faint of heart). However the train is quite small and slow (a fast walking pace), so it takes a good 50 minutes to make the trip each way.
Even in the middle of the week in the off season, it was crowded. Everyone is loaded into the quite small carriage with bench seating, so you have to snuggle up. Even though everyone was wearing a mask, being in a small airless carriage with 30 or so other people didn't feel safe. In fact the folks next to us objected to being asked to board the train with so many people, but since the train is the only way down other than walking, they had no choice. In fact, they got off half way down, presumably to walk the rest of the way.
They should really put the train to at least half capacity. I'd avoid this experience until Covid is no longer an issue.

We were on Rail Discoveries Jungfraujoch All Inclusive Tour and this included the train from Wilderswil to Schynige Platte. The weather was clear blue skies and 20°C+.
This was our favourite tour of the week. As walkers we took the alpine garden, Oberberghorn, Daube circuit. Approx 3km. Of wildflowers, a marmot, many butterflies, and great variety of terrain and extensive views.
The rail journey itself was very interesting through meadows with cattle bells ringing, steep woodland and tunnels.
Two men in traditional costume played their alpenhorns close by the station.
Strong footwear is recommended and we did wish we had our walking poles with us.

We really enjoyed our stay. The nostalgic room was decorated with cows and old objects and was very "homely". We enjoyed the hearty dinner and the service was very friendly. When we went to bed we were surprised to see a starry sky on the ceiling. We slept wonderfully. We will remember the trip fondly. Thank you to the team at the Hotel Schynige Platte.

On a wonderful sunny day we spent a nice day on the Schynigen Platte. Already at the station in Wilderswil we were warmly welcomed by the mountain railway team. After boarding we were wished a nice and pleasant ride. The ride was very pleasant and varied. Once at the top, you were also greeted friendly. The staff is also very helpful. We would love to come back

At long last one of my wishes came true and was able to complement my previous experiences from the fantastic Jungfrau region.
We enjoyed a fantastic old fashioned and slow ride up the mountain, the views are simply breath taking - any time of the year.
We very much enjoyed the approx. 2 walk / hike, and proper hiking boots are much recommended. The altitude should be well considered and take it easy / slowly to best enjoy the day.

Hiked the Panorama route of 6+ km, unfortunately we hiked it counterclockwise and felt the views would have been better clockwise keeping Interlaken and the lakes as well as the Alps to our front. The views were fantastic and the trails were well maintained. Half way through the hike you have the opportunity to climb a tall rock mass to get a panoramic view. This was the toughest part of the hike.
The train ride up and back down takes about an hour each way and the hike was a little under 3-hrs.

We had a magnificent trip on the train to the station at the top. It was so gods that we did it twice in our 10 day holiday based in Wilderswil. On a hot summer day the climate at the top was just right. There are great walks and an excellent restaurant which is both self service or with full table service.

A magnificent place, accessible with a period train. Quiet climb, with rack railway, like everywhere in the Bernese Oberland..... on arrival, magnificent landscape, we never tire. Catering at Swiss prices but of excellent quality. Come on, go up there, you won't be disappointed.....

Hallo, Ich lebe in Kanada aber spreche etwas Deutsche. Ich werde im Juni eine Woche in Lauterbrunnen sein (Valley Hostel). I am planning on doing daily hikes, and have reserved 2 nights in 2 HĂĽtten. I am now trying to figure out if I must buy local train/gondola tickets in advance, such as the Luftseilbahn to GrĂĽtschalp; small train to MĂĽrren, etc. I am reading your website with interest for the first time and am wondering if tickets for the Schnige Platte Bahn can be purchased once there, for same day travel. Vielen Dank, also for any other comments or advice you may wish to offer!

Vriendelijke groet, Mark

I am traveling end of July with an elderly person who loves plants and flowers so this place would b perfect but she is on crutches. Is it possible to get around the garden easily or is there a lot of climbing and uneven terrain there ? Thanks

Hi, your website (jungfrau dot ch) allows me to purchase a ticket for third week of April, (April19, for example). Is this a mistake? I believe trains are only available in May. Is there any way to visit Schynige Platte in April? Thank you!
