About
Owned and managed by the National Trust for Scotland, Robert Smail's Printing Works is an operational Victorian-era printing works, which still uses its original letterpress machinery to produce cards and stationery today. Visitors to the works will have the opportunity to find out about how printing was done before the days of the computer! There is a chance to set your own name in type to create your own unique letterpress bookmark, see out presses in action and view pieces from our extensive archival collections. Robert Smail's gift shop stocks a wide range of cards and stationery produced on the premises and a range of quality and quirky gifts to suit all pockets and purses. The printing works runs a variety of activities and workshops throughout the year. See our website for details.

Not to be missed.

A building full of history mostly un-altered for over 100 years. The 50 minute or so tour is well worth the £5 it costs. Support this wonderful premises by also buying something in the shop the excellent "guide book" is a £3 bargain.

A wealth of information lies behind the door!

The sights, sounds and smells of an authentic print works which brought back many happy memories to my husband, who was a compositor more than a few years ago!
Warmly welcomed by Joanne and then a very informative and enthusiastic tour, delivered professionally with a slice of lighthearedness by Jack and Tony! Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Very knowledgeable staff. Warm welcome and COVID safe tour. Very interesting even though we were not able to do any printing because of current restrictions

A hidden gem.

This is a lovely attraction. We took the tour of the print shop today and it was really interesting and enjoyable. Jo met us in the shop and was friendly and enthusiastic. Jack delivered our tour, he is an excellent guide, both informative and entertaining. He is very personable and held our interest with lots of interesting facts and demonstrations with the various pieces. Both staff are a real asset to NTS.

Not a proper business. Don't expect skilled customer service. Very keen to inform me I was wasting their time for printing job.

Just my type of museum!

Terrible pun, but wonderful museum. We loved every minute of our tour, the staff were knowledgeable and friendly and we learnt lots. You would never guess what's behind the scenes of this small shop frontage, a step back in time through a history of printing. And a really cool gift shop with cards, tea towels, and some brilliant posters. They also run letterpress workshops - I'm planning a return visit.

A great museum experience.

Took the tour of the working print shop and museum. Really interesting and informative. The tour combines practical demonstrations with the history of the print shop. The tour is in three sections, each with a different guide. The guides were all excellent, showing a breadth of knowledge and a relaxed style of delivery. Well worth a visit.

What a fantastic visit we had - we thought it would be interesting, but it more than exceeded our expectations !
Did the tour with Tony - became apprentices in the print works - he did a great tour, from the beginnings of the firm until the present day, showing all the documents that had survived.
Can highly recommend this - it’s one of the best tours we have ever done, thanks to Tony.

Only a little place, open for tours of limited numbers but we were lucky and rocked up on a Saturday without booking and there was only one other couple. Reception was very welcoming, Jack (our tour guide) was exceptionally well informed and gave a brilliant guide round. Then the Australian mans demonstration was really good. I’m not hugely technical but I very much enjoyed it and my husband was in heaven.
Highly recommended.

My favourite National Rust place ever.....
Jun 2019 • Couples
I guess my experience of these Printing Works and my review is excited by being a different tour and experience, from an endless array of houses and gardens, which however enjoyable and thankfully well restored are similar in their tone and style. These printing works are a restoration and "picture" of history that reflect a commercial activity of its time and are brilliantly restored. The location is quite good, but what actually makes this a brilliant experience is the passion of the team that present this window of history, and gave us an opportunity, however minor, to experience. I liked the place, i loved the team, and thoroughly enjoyed the 2 hours here. Tremendous!!!!
