About
You are hot on the trail of the best-kept secret! Cheese-making tools at hand, the aroma of the herbal blend in your nostrils, while you watch the cheese being made: welcome to Appenzell’s Cheese Paradise. Insights into the Cheese-maker’s Art. You can follow the manufacture of Appenzeller cheese from the visitors’ gallery, looking straight down into the 6'500-litre cheese vat where the milk is prepared and the cheese harp is drawn through the thickened jelly. The sight of 12'500 cheese wheels six metres below, where a robot takes care of them, is most impressive. The film in several languages in the Dairy Cinema provides additional information. On request, trained hostesses will act as your guide and explain everything.

Small heartfelt tour, cheese tasting pack and spice sachets are a great idea... for entrance fee of 12 Fr. per person , excessively expensive.
Restorant is OK and very Traditional and simply furnished, but the prices are outrageous. Cheese fondue portion is 30 Fr per person . Portion of cheese fritters with onion and applesauce is 19 Fr... Applesauce was out of the can and the onions were fixed & ready from the bag. It's a shame.
Thank you very much, but we will not come back and I will not recommend either.

Tour itself is in Swiss-german only, and even that seemed very dull. Shirt boring film, a few panels and that's it. Two windows overlooking the factory and the cheese storage but we came on a Saturday so everything was closed. Small herb station was fun but who knows why it was relevant. Visit included a small box of 5 cheese cubes of varying maturation, fun but hardly worth the visit. Best moment was running around the pasture behind the factory... We've been to much much better visitor centers - really, don't bother.

We ate here with our friends from Upper Bavaria. The platter portions were embarrassingly small and expensive! From the in-house cheese dairy, we expected much more substantial portions and a dark bread to go with the white bread! What a pity!

Though this attraction in itself is not an enough reason to go to Appenzell, once you're in Appenzell, if you have time, you really should try to visit this cheese factory. There are guided tours, with guides who speak very fluent English where you not only learn about how the cheese is made but you also get to learn the customs of the region and country. After the tour, you watch a movie and then you also get cheese tasting. So, it can be a great opportunity to ease hunger between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner. The place also has a shop where you can buy not only cheese but all local produces: hams, jams, honey etc all organic of course. I recommend especially the green colored honey. In the shop, also souvenirs and fondue sets and all other Switzerland specific objects are sold. The factory also has a self-service restaurant which I did not try though. With the generous hospitality of the personnel, I recommend this place to be visited once in Appenzell.

We visited the Gruyère cheese factory a few months ago and had a nice tour and a great lunch so we hoped Apenzeller would be as good. It was just as enjoyable in our opinion. The tour is free or about $10 with an iPad guide. There is a small shop and a typical restaurant attached featuring the Haus specials. We chose the fondue and the Rosti. The lunch was excellent and the menu should please almost anyone. The only caveat, remember you are in Switzerland and be prepared for the prices. For example, the delicious fondue was accompanied by a basket of small bead pieces to dip. The cost was about $25.00. Not terrible and in our opinion worth the cost for such a special treat. Just a reminder.

This is a touristy restaurant in the picturesque canton of Appenzell. You can get there honest Swiss country fare (cheese, sausages, etc). We had an (overpriced) Appenzeller cheese sampler as appetizer and salad and cheese tart for main course. The cheese tart was delicious but on the heavy side and the salad was nice and fresh but came with too much of the default dressing (advice: order the dressing on the side). The staff was very friendly and helpful explaining the menu that is written in Swiss-German dialect, so even if you are fluent in German, you may have some difficulty understanding it. Decent restaurant overall, but nothing to write home about. One sore point: they charge CHF 4 (about USD 4) for a pitcher of tap water (yes, you read it well, tap water) even if you have ordered other drinks; I thought this was the epitome of stinginess and reason enough for me not to come back. The adjacent cheese shop sells Appenzeller cheese of a quality that is not found in supermarkets.

We took an ipad tour (chf 10 per person) and really enjoyed it. The tour is very well explained and goes beyond cheese making, bringing interesting facts and curiosities about the region of Appenzell and its culture. The cheese making process is well explained and you can see most of the production steps. Guided tours are offered for free on Sundays and Wednesdays, but at the day of our visit the tour was being conducted only in german. We had lunch at the restaurant, the food was delicious and the servings generous - I highly recommend the cordon bleu filled with Appenzellerkäse.

A great tour with very good explanations about the process of cheese making including videos. Very nice overview of the history of the region and the place in particular. Definitely worth the detour from St Gallen.

When people ask me where I'm from and I say Appenzell, the first reaction tends to be: "Oh, like where the cheese comes from?" The response is yes, where the cheese comes from.
Appenzeller Cheese is the most well-known product from the two half cantons and also a major source of tourism advertising. The cheese in its different fat and age variations is loved by many.
The experience cheese dairy is simply lated out with guided tours or with iPads. See how the cheese with its famous secret recipe is made and then taste it.
The tour takes about 30 minutes and is informative with friendly staff. There is a play area for small children. What is fantastic is the gift shop with plenty of regional products and the restaurant with a fabulous selection of local dishes and desserts in a warm and comfortable ambiance created through the use of wood.
If you're a foodie or passing by, a visit to the Schaukäserei is well worth the stop.

Have visited this place in many occasion and I can´t have enough of it. Seeing the proses of producing cheese from the moment the milk arrives to the finished delicatessen plate on you table is awesome. Appenzeller is by far the best these in the world. Try it to believe it!

Wurde außerhalb einer kostenpflichtigen Führung irgendwo in der Schaukäserei der Prozess der Käseherstellung erläutert?

We will be in Zurich for 3 days next week and want to visit a cheese factory. We do not have a car but have Swiss Travel pass. How do we get there using public transportation? Can we book a tour in advance? There are only 2 of us.
Thank you.

Experienced travelers, I'll be in Bavaria for a few days (Oct 30-Nov2) before heading to Milan. I want to explore the area around Bavaria, and not just the famous castle(s). I was thinking about driving to the Appenzell District and specifically interested in the hike at Ebenalp.
My question is, once you get to the district, do you have to book a tour to Ebenalp or can you drive there, park, and then catch the train/tram to hotel/restaurant on the cliff?
I won't need to book any tours to cheese/choc tours, if I choose to take one, in advance since this isn't high tourist season?
Any advice is helpful!

If you drive to Appenzell, you can catch the Appenzeller Bahn (local train) to Wasseraun, then the cable car to Ebenalp. Very easy to do. Once you exit the cable car, walk toward the left toward Wildkirchli to reach Gasthaus Ascher. It's a bit of a downhill walk (not steep, just lots of gravel). When you are done, climb back up and take cable car down to Wasseraun, retracing your path. No tour necessary.
The cheese factory at Stein is a self guided display, so no tour us needed there either. Very easy to do on your own.
