- BillyBobSledLondon, United Kingdom796 contributionsStunning views after a medium effort hikeI hiked up from Alpnachstadt. There is a decent sized car park by the cogwheel railway station and a public toilet for getting ready/cleaning up afterwards. The route up took about 2h45min, but that was with getting a sweat on and with no stops, so 4h-4h30min is more realistic. The path was very clearly signposted, safe, never too steep or requiring scrambling. Great views towards the second half, and well worth the effort. Plan ahead and book the cogwheel railway down to avoid disappointment and save those knees.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten September 20, 2023
- ChongSingapore, Singapore60 contributionsSuperb View of Pilatus. The ride up Pilatus was pretty straightforward. Tips is to do it from Kriens (and not from the other way). I started at 8.30am and the first cable car ride went off at 9am. Spent a while walking up the top of pilalus and had a short coffee break at the restaurant. It took about 2 hours in total. There is a cave walk in and out of the mountain. Overall experience was pleasant and the view was breathtaking. Tips: do the trip from Kriens and not other way round. As we reached the cogwheel down at Pilatus Kulm. The queue to buy tickets and the queue to talk the cogwheels were horrible. People were standing in the hot sun queueing up for the ride up. Also, there is no need to reserved a cogwheel space if you are doing it from Kriens, provided if it’s on a weekday. I didn’t even have to use my reserved ticket for the cogwheel as there were no queue!Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 25, 2023
- Jeff KPittsburgh, Pennsylvania2,213 contributionsBuy Tix @ Pilatus Shop LuzernMy wife and I did the Golden Route on our own. The trip is very impressive as evidenced by the many glowing reviews. I’m posting a review to highlight the advantages of buying tickets from the Pilatus Shop Luzern if you’re going on your own. The store is centrally located and charges the same price as online. The woman working at the store explained the details of the route and answered all of our questions. It made our trip a lot easier and saved us a lot of internet research regarding the mechanics of the trip. We were very glad that we purchased our tickets there.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2023
- Andreas TBay City, Michigan91 contributionsStart your Pilatus journey in Kriens and go in the morningOn a clear day, the trip to the top of Pilatus is a must! Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Once on the summit, a variety of explorations are available. Two of us hiked out along a trail which provided information about the flowers of the region. This one was of medium difficulty. Others simply stayed and enjoyed the view. Two hotels are located on the mountain along with a few dining options. Though guide books recommend taking the cog rail to the top and the cable cars down, that may be fine. When we bought our tickets at the Pilatus store in Lucerne, we were advised to reverse the course since we wanted to include the boat ride. What a great suggestion! I must admit, the Pilatusbahn team accommodated the crowds by adjusting the schedules and sending the cog rail up more often than on the schedule.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 12, 2023
- DrDelGrossoBellevue, Kentucky150 contributionsDO NOT MISS THIS!!!The most beautiful views in the world. Two hotels on top and hiking everywhere. There are also activities for the younger people. Lunch was fabulous at the hotel overlooking the mountain. We did the hardest trail and it was not difficult at all. Took the train up and the cable car down. Gorgeous!!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 15, 2024
- Mark T6 contributionsThe best of our trip. The highlight of our trip. We did the boat to the cogwheel to the top. Spent ~3 hours up there including a meal, and then did the gondola to the alpine slide and then the cable car back down. Very, very awesome, all of it. There was a decent wait for the alpine slide, but that's because we did it on the way down and got to the mountain late (we traveled to Luzern first that day). I'd do it early if you can to beat the crowds. You could also do it "backwards," but I wanted to have reserved seats for the cogwheel going up to avoid lines. Do it in reverse probably doesn't require that. Either way, do it...Jungfrau sucked for us, I'd suggest this instead if you have to choose.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 26, 2024
- Robynl7173 contributionsMagnificent mountain - great day with family! We stayed in a hotel overlooking the mountain so as we saw it was a good visability and a clear warm day in Lucern, figured it was a good day to go up the mountain. We took the city bus (free with our hotel stay), up to Krien stop, followed the signs for Mount Pilatus, booked the trip up via the gondola and cable car and down via the cogwheel train. We bussed back to Lucerne to save time but we could have taken the cruise back. Weather was perfect, the mountain is magnificent and there are plenty of stops along the way. There is a great playground at the first stop and the food at the top was good too.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 30, 2024
- hayagreevaSan Jose, California61 contributionsGreat destination and the journey itself is an experienceIt's not just that the views at the top are amazing, they are spectacular in fact. But the whole journey to top and back is an unforgettable experience. We took the Kriens Zentrum gondola route on the way up. Came down the cog wheel train to Alpnach station and did the boat journey back to Lucern. The day we went was exceptionally pleasant and the views were clear. Had a great 1 1/2 hour hike around the peak so got the full 360 degree visual treatment. A swiss travel pass is highly recommended. You get a discount on the gondola as well as cog wheel train. And the boat ride is free, along with any train and bus travel. I also recommend Kriens as the starting point so you end up on the lakefront in the city center, have a meal and proceed with other sightseeing. Check out the boat timings in advance before coming down to Alpnach. We narrowly missed our first boat and had to hang around the dock for an hour for the next oneVisited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 1, 2024
- Melissa CBothell, Washington154 contributionsTook the gondola to Frakigaudi and enjoyed the activities thereTeens wanted to do the toboggan run so we took the bus to Kriens super easy and grabbed the gondola up to Frakiguadi. It was a beautiful day and could see really far from the ride. Had to wait in line for a bit to do the run but we enjoyed our time up on the mountain.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 2, 2024
- GlobetrotterBellaSan Antonio, Texas2,258 contributionsMust do and don’t skip the tobogganWe took the train to Kriens and then took the gondola up. The first gondola is small and seats about four people. The second one is huge and can get very crowded. With the half fare care, it was CHF 39. The views are beautiful. You’re truly on top of the clouds. There’s a restaurant that overlooks the mountains at one of their two hotels. They start serving lunch at 11. Like anywhere in Switzerland, it can be pricy. They also have a cafe inside. Bathrooms are available. The walk to the view points are not too difficult. We did ride the toboggan. It was 9CHF. They lend you a phone holder as you have to use both hands. Lockers free since you can’t take your bags with you. It is easy and fun. It takes about 4-5 minutes to reach the bottom. You are then pulled back up.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 2, 2024

Traveling with a friend in Zurich and it was a bit of a lousy day so we looked what else there was to do. Found Mt Pilatus tour from Lucern! We looked up sky cam the day before, it looked amazing so booked a round trip ticket from Zurich to Lucern, added local city bus/tram ticket and took train there. 45 min from Zurich. Got to Lucern, took a 10min bus ride to the bottom of the Mt Pilatus station and walked up, purchased our tickets and off we went!
I am a bit afraid of heights but the gondoletta ride was awesome! Absolute beautiful view even though it was cloudy in the city, once above the clouds, pure sunshine! If I recall correctly, winter special for the ticket was 57 CHF. We went on 31Dec.
Recommend to be up in line once it opens so you are the first ones up the mountain!

When you visit the website, it's rather confusing what Pilatus actually offers. There's a cable line with gondolas (four persons per gondola) from Kriens (Kriens Pilatusbahn, or Kriens Zentrum and a small walk) that goes to Fräkmüntegg, and a further cable line that transport 55 people to the top of the mountain (Pilatus Kulm). Hang on to the ticket they give you to get on, because you will need to scan it to go from the mezzanine to the top, but also on both return trips. If you go to the top, you can get out at the Fräkmüntegg mezzanine and enjoy a hiking trip, the playground, and there's apparently even places to grill outdoors. If it's snowing (it wasn't when we went in January) you can go sledding. If you go on to the top, you'll see the views, get to roll in the snow if you're adventurous (though there's no skying), or stay at the hotel and spa. The hotel seems impractical given the opening hours of the gondolas. You don't need to spring for staying at the hotel, and can just make it a day trip. Be prepared for a steep ascent of both gondolas and prices, as a drink will set you back 5 euros, and the gondola ride eleven times that amount.

In the summer of 1421 legends tell that an enormous dragon flew to Mt. Pilatus and crashed to the ground leaving behind the Dragon’s stone, an object with healing powers. Following the footsteps of mistery you can literally fly over the “Lake of the forest Cantons” (Vierwaldstättersee) with gondola lifts from the Lucerne municipality of “Kriens” (10min bus B1 far from Lucerne HB)(516mt) to Krienseregg (1026mt) and Fräkmüntegg (1416mt). Here you’ll be taking an high-tech Aerial Cableway up to the Pilatus Kulm summit station (2132mt). Tickets up to the peak: Adults 57.60 CHF, Kids 32.40 CHF; Discount for Swiss Travel Pass Owners 32.40 CHF: . A Floor to ceiling windows covered tourist center will provide you a 360 degrees panorama view of the Emmental Alps. A luxury hotel allows you to spend the night on the peak and a trail through Caverns carved in the mountain makes you feel like the Dragon could be back anytime! On the other side of Mt. Pilatus you can get to the same peak and back from the station of Alpnachstad via the steepest Cogwheel railway in the world with a gradient of 48%!

What a great trip! We bought a Golden round trip ticket that includes all transportation from Lucerne to the Mount Pilatus summit and back. It worked great for us. We started on a boat from Lucerne so you get to see some of the big Lake. Then we took the cogwheel train up the steep 48-percent grade which was simply amazing. The weather was perfect: blue skies and sunny. The views from the top were spectacular. We enjoyed a nice lunch at the summit restaurant. There are trails at the top you can hike. Then we caught the big Gondola down the other side of the mountain which was as amazing as the cogwheel train ride up. At the halfway station, we looked around, then took a cable car down the rest of the way. Finally a bus back to the Lucerne trainstation. All covered by the ticket, except the lunch. It takes most of the day, but what a day! Recommended.

Staying in Basel and found out most places closed on new year's day so booked train to Lucerne to go to Mount Pilatus. Then caught the bus to mount Pilatus @ÂŁ7.00 return. Was very cloudy and not sure whether worth going up. At the counter there is a screen so you can see what the top is like. Went up and were not disappointed. Well worth the money for the views, amazing place. Can have good and drinks when you get to the middle and the top. The train was closed when we went do took the cable car up and down. Cost of train from basel @ÂŁ30.00 return and then the cable cars @ÂŁ50.00.

Great day out facilttated by Sraka Risch, Manager at PIlatus. She has been integral in how I have been able to get some good deals to take my guests up to Pilatus Kulm. She really is a credit to the organisation and for small businesses like mine, she is massively supportive. As for the facilities, they are superb and it`s simply one of the bet days out in Switzerland

A 40 minutes ride to the top with two different cable cars. Amazing views all the if you have a bright day.
We were in January so the top was very windy although the temperature was only -1 it seemed colder.
You have magnificent views of all the surrounding mountains and of lake Lucerne.
The price though is not cheap at 116$ for 2 persons.
I recommend to bring your own water as prices at the top are extremely exaggerated.
In my opinion a must see if you’re in the area.

Beautiful view but the staff were quite angry and rude. Created a rather uncomfortable experience on numerous occasions. A couple of times was addressed rudely before I even opened my mouth... "Sir, leave! We are closed!" Barked one bartender at me. Caught me very much by surprise as I was just looking for a cup of water... And otherwise had no indication they were closed.. felt like they hated their jobs and had zero politeness. An easy "Sorry we are closed" would suffice...
Another instance, was told I was not allowed to drink my own water in the restaurant, though we ordered a big meal (ok, maybe swiss custom to mandatory buy water, even though water is a fundamental human right). And then, at the end of the meal, was watched by the waiter and asked to leave a tip, which is *not* customary in Switzerland. If you're going to gouge us for water as part of Swiss custom, don't demand a tip (which is not part of Swiss custom). Can't have your cake and eat it too.
While onboarding the lift, the employee aggressively split up our group of four into 3 and 1 solo person, even though the lift cars hold 4 people. When asked to wait and let others pass onto the lift until there was one for all of us, he became extremely agitated with us and forced us to separate. Way to pay 60 euro for a solo ride we looked forward together.
I have worked in customer service in numerous countries and this experience was absurd.

This was a great day trip from Lucerne.
An expensive tour is unnecessary, this is easily done on your own.
Take the bus to Kriens from Lucerne railway station. 10 mins). From there its a short walk to the Gondola (about 8 minutes uphill ) Buy your tickets here.
The gondola takes you to an area with tobogganing, ziplining and other activities suitable for most ages groups. There's even a kids zipline.
From there there's a cable car which takes you to the top of Pilatus. Really spectacular area. Can have lunch in cafe there or pack a picnic.
From there its easy to take the train down. The railway is next to the cable car station.
My recommendation is to travel in this sequence. The group tours start with the boat and then the train, which leads to huge queues for the train in high season. Reversing the order can save a lot of time.
I'd leave the boat trip for another day if you have time, and enjoy more of the beautiful lake.

What is difference in Kriens and klum? Also with no car how do we get to where we take cable car to top of mt pilatus? We want to also do the boat ride on lake lucern. Is there a combination ticket? Also canned stop n do the to toboggan down and then get back on to get to the bottom?

Kriens is a sort of suburb of Lucerne. The train station is Mattenhof. Only two stations away from Lucern Central. Next to the station you can catch a bus to Kriens-Pilatus station from where the cable car starts. "Kulm" is German for a mountain or peak.
A combined ticket for boat ride can be be purchased at the cable car station. But I would strongly recommend buying the Swiss Travel Pass for your entire stay. All train/bus/tram/boat rides are free. You also get 50% discount on the cable car and cog wheel train on the Pilatus route.

How do we go from Lucerne to pillatus on our own? Where to get down for activities. And do we need to buy tickets if we have a swiss travel pass?
Written June 10, 2024
There are two routes to Pilatus from Lucern.
1) Take the boat or train to Alpnach. Both are free with your travel pass. Boat take 1.5 hour and not frequent but an experience in itself. From Alpnach get a cog wheel ride ticket to the Pilatus peak
2) Catch a bus to Kriens Zentrum Pilatus and walk a few minutes to the Pilatus cable car station. Here you can get a gondola ticket to Pilatus peak
Most people do both, one way up and another way down. You can get full trip tickets either at Kriens or Alpnach. You also get a discount with your travel pass. I would recommend Kriens-Pilatus-Alpnach-Lucern boat route. You will end up on the Lucerne Lake at the end of the day

If I remember correctly you get the bus from outside the railway station. If you were standing at front of station it would be to your left, and a few yards up to the right. When you get off the bus cross the road and go thru a car park. Turn right when you come out car park and follow the road until you arrive at cable car

The mount Pilatus website is very helpful on the times, activities and info. The gondola takes off every 15 minutes or so. We went all the way to the top, stayed at the look out awhile and had a very yummy and affordable lunch at the restaurant there. Going to the top, staying at the top eating and going back down took about 3.5 hrs.

We bought tickets on the day and had no trouble. Took the cable car up and the funicular down to train station and then a quick train ride back to Luzern. We travelled in August. The lake is worth doing on another day as there's so much to see.

Does the Golden round trip ticket include Toboggan run at Frakmuntegg?
If not, how much does it cost to purchase the toboggan run ticket standalone?
Also, how do we go about hopping off at Frakmuntegg and continuing our journey to the top? Are the gondolas/cogwheel/cable car hop-in-hop-off kind?

It’s a small gondola (upto 4) from the bottom to the middle and yes you can get off and wander around
From there to the top is fast cable car which takes less than 5 minutes and can hold up to 50 people but is glass all around so view are great.
Not sure about the toboggan ticket
