We chose to visit this place because it is the closest onsen from Tokyo which takes 3.5 hours bus ride.

Last stop of the highway bus will take you to central area where Shima Grand Hotel is located. To explore the upper or lower area, you have to go on foot or rent a car/bike.

It is a little onsen town and nothing much to see except nature and some shops. We were not able to access to see the Okushimako Lake which is the main attraction of this district.

Good place. Very accommodating. Cheap and peaceful. Perfect place to get away from busy city life. Staff are very good. They speak English and tattoo friendly place with private onsen. 👍🏾

The old ryokan where we stayed cost ¥50,000 a night for double occupancy and dinner and breakfast. Very creepy hallways and grungy room, but endless items of Kaiseki on beautiful plates one after another. Some food was unidentifiable, looked like albino carburetor caps. Very respectfully served. Tiny tiny bits and pieces of things which were created by fanatical creativity in visually interesting minuscule servings. There must have been over 25 tiny plates on the table for dinner service. Many tasted very similar, with that over evaluated "umami " the foreigners have identified as an allegedly unique Japanese flavor range.

There seem to be haunted corners of this onsen. Parts evoke the weirder segments of "Spirited Away " There are scary one person capacity saunas and odd windows. Kind of smelly everywhere

Shima Onsen hot spring area is assumed to be found B.C. 989.
Since then, the area is famous for its hot spring to cure diseases, mainly gastrointestinal disease by drinking and bathing.
The hot spring is softer touch than Kusatsu Onsen hot spring.

Hotel Sekizenkan is one model of "Spirit away; Gibli".

Good area for taking a rest from busy days.
