Spectacular views of mt Asama and the mountains of Nagano. Nice short walks through the lava rocks, kids got excited, and scenic views of Japanese temples and shrines along the way. It gets crowded during the Japanese holidays (beginning of August), so try to avoid.

I am not sure how to get to this place as we had a driver with us for that day. Anyway, I thought it was a really lovely place to just walk around at your own pace and enjoy the scenery. Located on higher grounds, it offers a panoramic view of the surroundings. Also a good place to admire Mount... More

The park was filled with large stones hardened from lava. It would be a nice walk on a fine day with some lovely views of the surrounding mountains. Other than that, I wasn't sure what the appeal of the place was.

Its wide spread in terms of volcanic rocks , not so crowded generally.. and the drive to this place is "sugoii"... More

viewI've visited this place several times to show my friends from oversea(i'm not living in japan either). So far, everyone seemed to love this place. I love the view of asama mountain from here, too.

Interesting place to visit, nice trail to walk and merchants to buy from at the base. Only letdown is the overall cost. You have to take a toll road to get up and again to get down plus the cost to get inside.

This twisted rocky hellscape is complemented nicely by some attractive shrines, cheerful tourists and some darn tasty local brews (They go well with the 'volcanic' spicy ramen). A closer inspection of the rocks reveals various neat lichens and plants, and at one point a cave (apparently) contains a pocket of hikarigoke, or luminescent moss, discovered in 1910 by a visiting... Nice place to take a walk and a spectacular views of Karuizawa. Temple at the top of the volcano is beautiful and the park is never that crowded.
