- Josephine LeeSingapore, Singapore238 contributionsBoating experience wonderfulWe had booked the boat rental a week ahead on their website which cost 5100 yen Saturday Sunday and Monday and 4100 yen rest of the week for 30 minutes . Do note that this website needs a katakana name . Use the google search to translate your name and copy paste . Do note that the rental company will not cancel your fares even if it rains and the boats tend to sell out quickly . The boating was such a wonderful experience rowing near the waterfalls . A must do in Takachiho gorge . Do not worry if you cannot row - there are rescue boats and we bumped into other boats a lot . The parking area had limited parking and cost 500 yen .Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 3, 2023
- 恭子 藤2 contributionsRent a row boat and enjoy the Manai Fall.We rented a row boat. The view of the Manai Fall from the boat was magnificent and beautiful! We saw it very close, so we could feel the splash of the water vividly. We could easily reserve a boat since we visited there in late October, which was not the highest season for autumn leaves.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 28, 2023

But unfortunately there are huge waits to rent boats (2-3 hours) so it’s better to reserve in advance. Also the trail is closed for maintenance so if you don’t rent a boat, the whole thing is like a 15-20 minute visit. Not much else going on in Takachiho. - Musings_MJSingapore, Singapore630 contributionsBeautiful gorge with autumn foliageBeautiful gorge with autumn foliage. There was promenade with a pond and water wheel which was pleasant for a stroll. There were shops providing meals, desserts and souvenirs at the promenade. But be prepared for the hordes of tourists who come by in tourist buses. Will recommend parking at the higher levels where the bridges are and walk slowly down to the gorge and promenade.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 1, 2024
- EL PMelbourne, Australia74 contributionsGeologically amazing. Hire a car to get there! We had an easy drive from Kumamoto to Takachiho. We only booked two days and should have allowed a couple of extra days as there is so much to enjoy at a gentle pace. It had rained heavily before our arrival but that did not stop us from walking the beautiful paths around the gorge. There were no row boats on hire on the day as flood water was still powering through the gorge. To see how the lava solidified more than 1,000 years ago is a geological wonder. A little further down this road is the Amano Iwato Shrine which is really a full day visit. If you are a lover of haiku, be sure to see the memorial stone dedicated to Matuso Basho. This was an unexpected treasure to find. One of his haiku is etched in the rock. There are plenty of restaurants in Takachiho but you may need a local to guide you because unless you can read Japanese you will easily miss them.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 4, 2024
- Dick ZBangkok, Thailand3,827 contributionsLovely nature, nice walk, bit crowdedThis is one of the main natural points of interest on Kyushu Island. From all the reviews there is a lot of confusion how to get there and where to go. It is actually quite simple. If you come by car you follow the signs and come by a parking that is probably full. Just drive on for about 1,5 km and on your left there is another parking that is probably also well filled but if you wait a bit you can park there. From this parking a stairway leads down to the gorge and finally to where the rowing boats are rented out. So unless you have someone to move the car for you it doesn’t really matter which parking you choose, you have to go up and down the path to and fro anyway. The path is easy to walk, does have a lot of steps and the distance for me was about 1600 footsteps (one way). From the further parking you get to see more. At the end of the footpath is a restaurant. If you want a boat you need to reserve it. They take 2-3 persons and you have to row yourself. It can become quite crowded on the water, this also applies to the footpath.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 15, 2024
- tkpuarSingapore, Singapore1,360 contributionsMUST DO IN FUKUOKAOur family of five drove more than 3 hours to enjoy this attraction. The gorge is an awesome sight, the rocks and water flow is a sight to behold. The air is very fresh. We visited in early summer. Not much crowd. There is a good option for a boat ride which was not open to us as we arrived late.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 21, 2024
- Lawrence C67 contributionsTakachiho GorgeVisiting Takachiho Gorge was one of my dreams. We went there in July 2024, on a Wednesday, hoping for less visitors. But even for a weekday, the place was very crowded, because of its popularity. The parking lots around the gorge were full, so we parked our car a little further, at a visitor center. From there we climbed down for a 15 minute hike. The path was well maintained, almost half of it were concrete stairs, then paved all the way to the gorge. The view was breathtaking, with the water rushing through the narrow gorge, basalt cliffs forming amazing formations, waterfalls at every step... From the bridge crossing the gorge we saw many boats in the water, rowing past the falls. When we reached the boat ramp though, we found out that all the boat tickets for the day were sold out, so we missed the chance to row through the gorge. Right next to the boat ramp was a beautiful waterfall, and above that a rest area that had some restaurants, cafe, an aquarium and a nice park to stroll. The gorge is about two hours drive from Kumamoto, but public transportation is difficult. It's an amazing experience, well worth going. If you go in the summer, take water with you. The Japanese summer is oppressing! Even for a 15 minute hike, we drank a lot of water. There were vending machines on top of the stairs, as well in the rest area on the bottom. Please call ahead to reserve tickets for the boat ride.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 9, 2024

We signed up with Explore Kumamoto to bring us to Takachiho Gorge from Kumamoto. The Gorge is indeed a unique beautiful natural scenic spot.
We pre-booked online the 2 boats 1 week before our trip at Y5100 per boat for the 30mins ride. Each boat seats 3 persons and only the person seated in the center will row. Safety vest is worn and pointers given by boating staff on how to handle the oars. Water is calm in the bay and a safety boat is nearby should you need assistance.
As we booked for the noon boating, the sun rays on the Manai Falls is a spectacular sight. It was such an unforgettable memorable experience!
After the ride, we adjourned for lunch in the Gorge area, eating chilled flowing noodles.
We also visited the Kunimigaoka viewpoint, touted as one of Takachiho's best kept secrets.

Takachiho gorge is quite stunning and worth a visit. We drove and park at the carpark nearest to the gorge for 500 yen per entry. There are two other carparks but slightly further away. A short walk leads to you the gorge when you see the waterfall and other lovely sights. There are also a couple of restaurants near the carpark.

Since it was Golden Week, I went there in the afternoon and was directed to Parking Lot 4. The road to Parking Lot 4 is barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other, and you have to avoid pedestrians. People with large vehicles should pray that no oncoming vehicles come. Thankfully, the parking lot was free. During Golden Week, a shuttle bus was available for 200 yen for adults. By the way, it seems to operate 36 days a year. I was told that it was about a 30-minute walk there, so I walked to the center of Takachiho Gorge, Manai Falls, and decided to take the shuttle bus back to the parking lot. The promenade was great with great views and plenty of photo spots. However, there were long downhill slopes and many stairs, so I thought it would be difficult for people with weak legs. Even the high school students were tired just from the trip there, and I wondered if they would walk this way on the way back, so I think it's better for elderly people and those with small children not to push themselves.

It's beautiful from above, but I recommend taking a boat and looking at the view from the water.
It was raining, which was a bit disappointing, but the water level didn't rise, so we enjoyed the view from the boat.
We couldn't bring an umbrella, so we bought a poncho from the ticket booth, but it was too loose and the sleeves were too short, so our arms got soaked.
A shop on the other side of the bridge sells raincoats for the same price (200 yen when I bought mine), and this one has sleeves, which I later found out makes it easier to row the boat.
I don't understand why they sell ponchos at the ticket booth.
The boat fare is quite expensive at 5,100 yen for 30 minutes. At the boarding point, they told us that it was okay to go a little over 30 minutes (because it was raining and the boat was pretty empty?), but the area we could go by boat was small, and we could go around the same place about three times in 30 minutes, and we were back after 20 minutes. If it had been sunny, we might have been able to float leisurely, but we could only go over a very small area.
There were only a few boats because of the rain, and there were times when the boats were touching each other, so I thought it would be too narrow and difficult when all the boats were out in season. (This is my personal opinion.)
But the view from the boat was wonderful and I recommend it. (It's beautiful from above too.)

If you stay near the gorge area, by all means - do visit the gorge . But jf you stay quite a distance such as more than 1hour away, it is not worth the visit due to its lack of accessibility as well as the ridiculous rates you pay to row a boat out to near the waterfalls for 5000 yen . It is rather pretty but I would not spent 5000yen to row a boat over 30minutes .
Worth a visit and not a return visit . Obscure location makes it unappealing . Currently parts of the walkway are also closed for renovation .

I am wondering if it is okay to travel Takachiho in winter. I am planning to visit here in the beginning of Feb. Besides, I want to take a boat at the gorge and walk Takachiho Olle course if it is possible. Is there any problems or anything i have to keep in mind when i come Takachiho in winter time?
Written January 20, 2019
Thank you for your inquiry.
Last year there was a day when Takachiho had snow in February.
A warm day continues this year, but there is a possibility of snow when the weather is bad.

On va aller à Takachiho, aux gorges et savez-vous si on peut réserver une barque en avance, par internet ou en téléphonant ?, pour éviter les heures d’attente, car nous n’avons pas beaucoup de temps sur place ! Merci

You can not book a boat.
It is only acceptance on the day.

How about going to Takachiho in early Feb? Is it a good time and the road will be safe ? If there is no cold wave it should be fine? Do you think it is possible to go for a day trip from Aoshima? Thank you for your advice.
Written November 22, 2018
1.From Aoshima Shrine to Miyazaki JR Station: one hour by bus and walk.
2.From Miyazaki JR station to Nobeoka JR Station: one hour 8 minutes by express(one hour 31 minutes by local).
3.From Nobeoka to Takachiho Bus Center: one hour by bus.
But you need to check time tables well in advance as frequency is not so much.
If you drive a car, it takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. Good Luck!

Thats a good question. I'm sure it's a long ways away. The only transportation was via public bus, about three hrs. I would only stay a day and go back the next day.
