土佐にはもう一人維新の英雄がいるのだ

龍馬に比べてあまりにも知名度も人気も低いが、すばらしい貢献をなした中岡慎太郎。高知ではなく、ここ安芸郡の庄屋の生まれ。龍馬が下士だとすれば本来中岡は武士ですらない。その中岡がどのようにして育ち、維新の志士となっていったかは本もそれほどなく、この地元にひっそりと建つ祈念簡易来なければなかなかわからない。土地の人がその誇りにかけて作ったこの記念館、ぜひ一般の流行や作られた人気によるのでなく、実際のその人となりを知り、岩崎弥太郎と同様に、土佐が生んだ英傑に思いを致す機会を是非つくってほしい。

資料館だけでなく、村全体が昔のままのようでした

幕末の偉人が好きで、中岡慎太郎館には一度行きたいと思ってました。山道を走って大きな橋を渡ると、タイムスリップしたかのように昔の家と静かな雰囲気がただよってきて、本当に当時の生家を訪れるような気がしました。お客さんは自分達しかいなくて、時期的にとても寒かったです。しかし資料の数は豊富で、とてもよく理解できました。

史料館、生家、遺髪理葬墓地など、中岡慎太郎に関する史蹟が固まっています。
モネの庭や岩崎弥太郎生家も近くにあるので、セットで訪れることができます。

中岡慎太郎館は小さいながらも、興味深い内容で、よくできています。

はす向かいにあるお土産店には小さなカフェがあり、のどかな風景を見ながらゆっくりくつろげます。
私が行った時は、収穫してきたばかりだというトマトを売っていて、甘くて絶品でした。

建物の外見より、内容がとっても充実しているところです。中岡慎太郎、名前程度しか知りませんでしたが、神童・・・ですね。そしてその行動力、脱帽です。西郷どん、と時期が重なるので、時節柄、興味深く見学できました！

この人はどのような「功績」が歴史上にあったのか？

龍馬の付け足し程度にしか認識されていないのでは？私の中でも龍馬と一緒に死んだ人程度の知識しかない。色々と資料とか映像を駆使して業績らしきものを幾重にも「包装」してかなり大きくみせているが・・・。ここに５００円の入場料を払って入ったのだが、遺憾ながら我々６人ともに「料金に見合う価値があった」と云う人は居なかった。私のイメージも又、来る前とは大した変化もなかった。京都のどこかの料亭で龍馬と一緒に死んだ、と云うだけの人でした・・・。銅像もあって、生家も保存されているが・・・北川村に生まれた幕末の志士らしいが、龍馬と一緒に死んでなかったら今ほど名前が通っていた人かな？と思った。

坂本龍馬を有名にしたのは司馬遼太郎さんですが、中岡慎太郎は一般的に龍馬が暗殺された時の同席者と言う認識しか無いと思います。ここに来れば史実はどうだったのかを考えさせられますよ。因みにJAF会員であれば入館料が100円割引になります。

遺品や資料などもあり、隣には生家もありました。

思いのほか楽に行けました

北川村なのでちょっと遠いかなあと思ったのですが、奈半利から高速道路のようないい道が出来ていて、思いのほか楽に行けました。坂本龍馬の盟友という人物ですが、思想は硬派。簡単なビデオが上演されて、大政奉還が終わっても、幕府を温存したのでは意味がないと詰め寄る龍馬にシーンとかなるほどという感じ。生家もすぐ近くにあるので、合わせて見学するといいと思います。
