Shops are a bit commercialized like every main attraction

There are many shops along the approach path and steps to the Kompira temple, some selling souvenirs and other snacks. The noodle shops in the vicinity of the lower part of the approach to the shrine entrance are worth trying. There are also many parking lots which charge around 500 yen per stay.

A “must” to see if visiting Kotohira

Feb 2020

Well worth the effort if you are able to climb the 1368 steps!!
You will feel enhanced with the achievement.
Plenty of resting places on the way..
Don’t forget your water.

Great cultural experience

Beautiful shrine. Honouring those living by the sea. Fine temple and beautiful site. The climb up to it (1600 plus steps) only adds to the visit.

Many quaint shops along the way

As you are heading up towards the base of the many steps yet to come you will walk past a good number of shops for you to peruse. There is a very nice udon shop to visit if you are close to the lunch hour, shops at which to buy some knickknacks, including a place that does some nice woodwork pieces. There is a place where you can have your feet pecked at to relieve yourself of dead skin (they say it feels great!), and a great place to buy sake too. It does not feel "over commercialized". It just feels nice. Enjoy your stay!

Impressive temple.

Though we had visited many temples in Japan, yet nothing in comparison with Kompira Shrine. Got to walk 700 steps to arrive at the main hall and another 400 to O Shrine. The scenery up there is magnificent. Kotohira is just down below. A must when you are at Kotohira.

800 steps to the top was not difficult even that it was a rainy day. Views with mists was stunning. I felt like i was traveling in the heaven. Lol

To reach this shrine you have to climb a lot
When reach the shrine you feel yourself a new person,you can get a lot of spiritual energy
I hope I can go there over 5 years ago
It is a journey, like I can compare it is like you are a rechargeable battery and when you reach the shrine you are fully charge
