We started early before the crowds and tour groups turned up. Plenty of steps but wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Good accommodation options within easy walk of the start of the shrine. Make sure you stop on the way back at the bottom flat section to bath those weary feet. Just on the left about 100 metres from the end of the mall.

The reason for being here is to visit Kotohira Shrine http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1121431-d1397392-Reviews-Kotohiragu_Shrine-Kotohira_cho_Nakatado_gun_Kagawa_Prefecture_Shikoku.html
Kotohira-gū (also known as Konpira-dai-gongen, Konpira-san, or Konpira Shrine) is a marvel. Konpira-san is the name appearing on the free tourist information brochure we picked up at the Tourist Information Center in the Marugame train station.
We purposely arrived early while the temperatures were still cool. We wanted to avoid the crowds of tourists who came in droves later in the morning.
The main road up to the shrine is lined with shops selling souvenirs and noodle restaurants - we were so early most were not yet open for business. On the way down we walked through the park and again avoided the tourist shops. At the bottom, in town, we ate lunch at a busy udon restaurant frequented mostly by locals. The townspeople all greeted us as we walked by; they seemed surprised to see foreign visitors. Although it was pleasant walking around town, we found that the cars and trucks drove very quickly not anticipating many pedestrians.

We had the "pleasure" of climbing to the Kotohira shrine. You start in the town where were numerous places to eat. This area is famous for its udon.
You subsequently walk through fairly narrow streets surrounded by shops geared for tourists. When we were there I did not see anyone who did not look like they were from Japan. The other reviews are in Japanese so perhaps a location off the beaten path?
You climb a lovely 785 or so steps lempira amazing shrine. The view is breathtaking and well worth the climb. When we were there it was 95 degrees so I felt that I was going to die - or wished for it after awhile. You can actually keep on climbing which is a total of 1368 steps. I would have needed an ambulance to get me that high that day.
Well worth the trip and see what the natives do as opposed to the tourist books recommend.

This small town has some nice ryokans, a famous temple complex, a nice shopping area extending from town up the hill toward the temple and several a couple local sites.

This is a touristic small town in the day time but becomes very quite in the evening. I spent a day there many for a half-day walk up the hill to a shrine. The walk uphill takes at least 2 hours covering 1368 steps, to be exact.

This religious festival is scheduled yearly in Kotohira from Oct 9 through 1. Among the different events, a nightly parade is very popular. Hundreds of local people join the monks and march down the shrine through the city wearing beautiful costumes. They re-enact events which happened centuries ago. Really scenic (see pictures)

The Shinto Shrine is definitely worth visiting. It's a beautifull Shrine and it's more than worth the climb up the several hundred stairs. After you've visited the shrine, leave Kotohira as soon as possible. The town is a touristtrap and a dreadfull place to stay the night. It's better to visit it on a daytrip from Takamatsu.

Service good in all the places we went to. A great small town. Mostly focused on the Temple and this is one of the most important temples in Japan.
