- Robyn RSydney, Australia48 contributionsHeaven above and all around on NaoshimaA dream come true. For years I had wanted to stay at Benesse House and experience art and architecture that were designed for harmonious embrace. Almosst everything has been designed by the great architect, Tadeo Ando. Such a divine setting on the art island of Naoshima on the Bennese art site that has a number of world class museum and installations of exquisite art, including Monet, Yayoi Kusama, Walter da Maria, James Turrell, and many others. We stayed in the hotel section called Park, which was minimal in appearance and maximalist in thoughtful design and comfort. All rooms have a beautiful view to sculptures on the lawn and the sea beyond. This building houses the efficient reception, which its free shuttle bus around the site and the island; and also down along the seashore, the superb restaurant for breakfast and at nightfall with French (with Japanese touches) degustation dinners that are part of the package. Japanese dinners are at another restaurant on site. I am grateful to have found a booking online after waiting so long - the bookings process requires waiting online to book over 100 days in advance. We experienced a full moon over the site and sea, never to be forgotten. We stayed here for 5 nights and relaxed fully. The shuttle bus also takes you to the two townships where the ferries come and there is great art to be enjoyed, along with the town’s bathhouse, decorated by artists: a unique and fabulous experience for bathing, sex segregated.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 30, 2024
- taitaihkHong Kong, China554 contributionsBeautiful museum in a stunning locationThis was our first stop on our day trip to Naoshima. We took the town bus from the ferry to the end of the line at Tsutsuji-so then walked along the waterfront past the yellow pumpkin and all the outdoor art works between there and the Museum. It’s a very pleasant walk with plenty to see although the last part is uphill and would be a little uncomfortable on a hot day. The museum is housed in a beautiful building and has a wide variety of modern art. Entry price, ¥1300, also includes the Valley Gallery a little further on. Views from the terraces were wonderful. Photographs are allowed of some, but not all, of the exhibits. The cafe on the top floor looked good but it was very busy with a long queue of people waiting. There are a lot of outdoor exhibits in the area between the hotel and the museum and well worth walking around to see them all.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 28, 2024
- silverspireSingapore, Singapore383 contributionsInteresting museum + architectureVisited mainly for the architecture but the art works within the museum are also interesting by itself. There are multiple outdoor ones strewn around the compound. We spent about 1hr here and even then it is abit rushed. Best to cater about 2 hours to explore fully at a leisurely pace.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 23, 2024

While you are on the beautiful Naoshima, you cannot miss this self-called art museum, which originated the birth of the island as art Center.
It is basically an architecture exercise for Tadao Ando who certainly had fun designing the complex building. Beyond the architecture and the views on the surroundings, you can honestly feel cheated by the excessive reputation of the place and the poor artistic content. The place is more operated as a prestige hotel with restricted access areas than a museum to really enjoy, not much to see apart from a few uninspired artists.
Maybe the best part will be to have a coffee/lunch break there to make the experience more filling than empty minimalism.
But while you make the trip to Naoshima, you cannot avoid it, must see with low expectations!

We stayed two days at Benesse House and enjoyed this immersive experience very much. In fact, i wish we could have stayed longer. The location overlooking the Seto Sea is breathtaking, the quietness and sense of serenity is palpable even though you are in a concrete building.. and what a building it is, spectacular !! the room was perfect, spacious, good facilities, amazing view and sunrises from the large balcony ( only weird thing is that there is no view obstructor on the balcony with the other rooms next to you so if everybody is outside at the same time there is no sense of privacy ) The food in the Japanese restaurant is fantastic and very creative, fresh and simply perfect. What a pleasure it is at night to wander around the art collection of the museum which includes a painting by D. Hockney. We loved walking around the property and look at the art… you can totally disconnect and feel at peace, remote from the rest of the world. There is an efficient bus service taking you from the port to the property and all runs very smoothly. The reception staff is on the ball and very helpful. One point for improvement would be the breakfast which could be of a higher standard for this level of establishment.

This is the largest museum on the island and doesn’t require reservations. The museum itself, as with several others on the island, is an art piece itself combining concrete and light in often angular ways. Three of my favorite pieces from the island were here and are representative of what is offered, 1.) an entire wall had a large art piece called the, “River Avon Mud Circles by the Inland Sea” which consisted of circles painted with mud and on the floor a circle made from driftwood, 2.) “Three Chattering Men”, which featured three human sized wooden built outlines of men with their jaws on hinges so they opened and shut along with the audio of inane chattering, and, 3.) “The World Flag Ant Farm”, which was over 100 rectangular ant farms made from packed sand to match the different national flags of the world attached together with tubes to give the ants the possibility to move around. I suggest that you combine visiting here on the same day as your Chi Chu Art Museum reservation since they are located in the same area of the island. Make time after or in-between these visits to see the Valley and Lee Ufan Museum on the same day..

Splendid museum both architecturally and for the context in which the works of art are exhibited.
The entrance fee (Yen 1300) also gives access to the Valley Gallery. Other works at the Seaside Gallery, facing the sea.
Most of the works can be photographed.
Not to be missed when visiting Naoshima.

Perfect tourist trap.
We spend more time getting to the museum from the parking lot by bike than visiting it.
There are a few works there even though the building is gigantic.
Apart from the view, this place is of no interest.
I regret having wasted part of my time on the island by visiting this museum whose only virtue is to attract visitors.

I visited on August 31st as part of an art appreciation tour of Naoshima.
This museum is run by the Benesse Corporation, but the contemporary art exhibits were almost incomprehensible to me.
It was a compact building, but there was no clearly indicated route for the tour, so we often ended up going back and forth repeatedly. There were no notices indicating the artworks, so perhaps the exhibition policy was to leave it up to the visitor's sensibilities.

Be careful with children!!! It's Benesse and free for those under 15, so I thought children would be welcome, but when I brought my children, they followed me around and watched me. They also scolded me as if they were fed up with me. I wanted my children to see great works, but it was just unpleasant.

Hay que sacar entrada con anticipación? Cual es el costo?

How do you preorder tickets to Benesse museum. I could not find it on their website.
Written October 11, 2018
You may have figured this out. We did not pre order any tickets to any museum while we were there. They were all fairly short lines if any at all. We bought them on the spot. We did check times/dates though because some museums are not open all the time or on certain days........by the way really enjoyed the museum that at the time had recorded individual heart beats, and then you record yours and listen to it while walking through the hallway/museum.

What is the cost for electric bikes and what range do they have and can you charge them if you rent for several days

We will be there 12th Sept to 15th Sept are there any closures we need to know about?
Written August 11, 2018
The day we have allocated to visit naoshima island is Monday. The only open museum is the Benesse House. Is it worth it to make the trip with only being able to visit the Benessee House.
