It’s very cute. Simply cute. Nothing much more that I can add really. Colourful? Dotty? Spotty? Pumpkinish?

This fiberglass red pumpkin welcomed us to Naoshima, the art island, as soon as our ferry from Uno entered Miyanoura Port. Placed at the water's edge, the 13-feet-high work by Japanese artist Yayaoi Kusama features her trademark polka dots. Big and black, some are actually holes that visitors can peer through from inside for a photo.
Created in 2006, the interactive art piece has openings to enter and to exit and plenty of room in the empty interior. Children and adults seemed to be having much fun investigating the sculpture (touching permitted). I thought the scenes of the island when looking out provided good photo ops in addition to what are available from the exterior. Though the popular piece beckons immediately when leaving the ferry, those in a time crunch for catching a bus may want to wait to visit until their return.
Akakabocha is one of two pumpkin sculptures by Kusama on the island. The other, Yellow Pumpkin, stands on an old wharf that extends from a sandy beach and faces the Benesse Hotel. That pumpkin is not an interactive creation.

It is so easy to get there, it is very close to the ferry, so do not hesitate. But be aware that it is more gimmick than art, to my taste.

This is the third Yayoi Kusama display I have seen this year. This is the only pumpkin that I have gone into and it has red for lights inside. I waited later in the day to take a photo when it was not as crowded. It was worth the wait!

Very fun piece of art. Our grandchildren loved climbing inside and peaking out the holes. Great area where all ages can wander and enjoy

There are two of the iconic Yayoi Kusama’s sculptures, one red and one yellow. Their position in front of the sea makes a great contrast with the natural view. Iconic.

Both sides of the island have free open air sculptures that are great to touch and take pics at we hired bikes from the port and rode from one side to the other in about 10 mins- just a couple of undulating hills

I like this. I am not sure why, or for what deeper artistic understanding it is suppose to evoke from me, but I like it. I did not feel moved, or transported, or deeply agitated to a more profound understanding of the universe, but I still like it. Check it out. Put your hands on it. Get your photo taken by a Naoshima landmark.

The pumpkin is visible as you approach on the ferry, so it's the first art piece most people see when they arrive. It's somehow inviting - you can walk inside of it - and there are usually people around it shooting photos. A fun greeting to Naoshima island.
