Wonderful Artisnal Shoyu Brewery
Oct 2019
We so enjoyed our visit to Yamaroku Shoyu. The guide spoke English very well and was so welcoming and informative, sharing interesting information about the brewing process and the history of the business. It was fascinating to learn about this traditional shoyu brewing process and I am so pleased that we visited. While less than 1% of shoyu is brewed using these traditional practies, I am heartened to know that Yamaroku carries on this important cultural tradition. I look forward to using the shoyu I purchased.

It was my first experience to visit Soy sauce factory. The staff were so friendly and explained about the history of yamaroku shoyu on Japanese language.

I am not sure whether the staff can speak English or not.
Don't forget to taste and buy the soy sauce they are selling outside after the tour finishes.
Since, i am staying in Japan for 10 years, i haven't tasted such a fresh Soy sauce like Yamaroku Shoyu. Also, the soy sauce they are selling are cheap.

Like Nothing we've ever had!

We loved our tour and tasting at Yamaroku Shoyu. The enormous vats of fermenting soy sauce filled the air with a brothy, sweet, rich odor that promised enormous flavor for the product and delivered. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and while the explanation was in Japanese, one of our group was able to translate for us. We bought four small bottles to come home with us.

Great little tour, but it's good to combine this with something else

We passed many shoyu factories during our time during on Shodoshima, but we decided to visit Yamaroku because we read it was a working factory and not just a touristy place. We cycled to the factory which wasn't too hard to find, although make sure you have a decent map or a phone with GPS. The locals were able to point us in the right direction easily.

Yamaroku turned out to be a great choice, and we enjoyed our tour which was informative and interesting. One of the best things was that we just turned up and it was no problem. Other tours require you to book ahead.

The tour itself was only about 30 minutes, and we asked a lot of questions. I don't think they would be able to do an english tour, but they do have pamphlets in english in case you don't understand Japanese. They also have a nice documentary video you can watch about how the family was going to close the factory unless someone could be trained to make the wooden barrels that the soy sauce is kept in.

You can buy many soy sauce products here, and also do a tasting after the tour. Overall, well worth the trip. We were also able to visit a nearby somen making factory (Nakabuan) to try making the noodles ourselves. Although this needed to be booked ahead, I would really recommend doing both as there isn't much else in this area.
