the best autumn colors
Nov 2019
We travelled in Japan from mid October to mid November, hoping to enjoy the colorful Fall reds, but we missed out on the colors, too early. On the Kankakei ropeway, we finally saw the beauty of the reds. While there is not much at the bottom of the ropeway, at the top we could eat, shop, and of course, hike around.
bus there and back is not great. We got the first bus up in the morning, adhering to the posted schedule. But on the way home, there is a 2 hour interval between in the afternoon buses, and there were so many waiting for that 4 pm bus, I am amazed we all got in.

Breathtaking
Aug 2019
This serene ride is so smooth and the views so breathtaking that it creates a wonderful sense of peace inside you. The ride has music piped in to add to the effect. It is only interrupted by the occasional "other guest" in your cable car that can't stop talking.

We took the Ropeway down ... starting out with an incredible view on top and ending being captured in the cradle of the waiting exit. So smooth.

I loved the mountain tops that we passed on our left ... so close you could almost reach out and touch them. I understand that sometimes there are winds that cause the Ropeway to be closed. So you might want to check the weather before you go there.

Great view from ropeway
Oct 2019 • Friends
Of cause you can walk up to the mountain top. Bus to here is lot frequent, some season no bus at all. We missed our bus has to wait for another 50 minutes. At ropeway station you can have free WiFi so waiting 50 more minutes was not unbearable.

Ropeway up. Walk down.

We took a very early public bus from our ryokan to Kusakabe and then a connecting bus to the gorge in order to get there before the crowds. That was a good plan, but even so the 14 minute bus ride was very crowded with standing room only.

The gorge bus drops passengers off in a parking lot from which there are several long series of steep steps, one to the ticket office and one to the landing where you actually board the pink cable car. Be aware of this if stairs are a problem for you.

The ropeway ride itself was quite short, about 5 minutes. We choose to stand in the very rear of the car to photograph looking down into the gorge. One of us took a video, the other took still shots.

While the view was exciting and the rock formations very interesting, we were about 3 days too early for peak color albeit we had been told by TIC that the gorge was at peak.

A cable car rising through tightly constricted valleys of volcanic rock was what we were expecting from the photos we had seen online. That happens of course, but only for about the last 200 meters. As a result, we’re a little disappointed by the time we got off the ropeway and we were not blown away by what we saw as we had hoped to be.

The ropeway station at the top is much more elaborate than the one below which is just bare bones. The top station building has an information and ticket sales counter plus a restaurant or two. There is a big deck worthy of Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, a viewing platform of the gorge from which you can get some splendid views but they are frequently intruded upon by the cable cars. If you wait a bit you can get an interesting photo of two cars going in opposite directions.

We are glad we chose to walk down and get a different view and experience. It was a relatively easy walk.

The biggest disappointment is that it has no disabled access none at all, strangely it has just been awarded a Michelin Star.

The cable run is short a few minutes the is incredible as is the view from the top, the place seems worn out but it’s cheap enough but lots of stair, when we came down one of the gateway had been left open which could of been dangerous if someone had fallen.

There is a couple of walking track.

Beautiful Autumn Colours
Nov 2017 • Couples
Rented a car from Orix Car Rental which is a short walk from Tonosho Port (came from Okayama New Port)

Arrived at the ropeway at 11am. Managed to get on to the ropeway before a tour group did so it took us less than 10 mins in line.

Autumn colours were in their peak and it was gorgeous the entire way up to the summit station. There were several viewing spots and souvenir shops on the summit. Spent about 45 mins up there before taking the doorway down again.

There was a long line when we disembarked and it looked like a hour wait at least. So go early and hopefully there's no tour group in line with you!

Famous for Autumn colorful scenery
May 2017 • Friends
I went in May, so i didn't see colorful leaves but fresh green leaves & rocks make a great view, too. I can imagine how stunning it can be in Autumn. Waiting time for the peak time in the peak season- 2 hours! Wow! Maybe join a tour?

Quick way to a great view
Sep 2016 • Family
Kankakei Gorge is one of the must-sees in Shodoshima. If you are in the area for a limited time, Ropeway is a great way to get to the view - much quicker than walking on a trail on the side (which is also nice too!).

Needless to say the best time to go is autumn as the pictures of the area speaks itself with the lovely autumn colors. Yet I believe it can be easily enjoyable at any time of the year, esp. spring. lovely green all over the place on the volcanic rocks, along with the oceanic view of Setouchi Inland Sea is worth a visit.

I suggest you take an extra layer as the temperature up on the top is a couple of degrees lower.

Economically depressed town and no reliable public transportation
Jun 2015 • Friends
Please do not go thinking you can rent a car to maximize your time on the island unless you have a Japanese driver's license. We bought a bus day pass for 2000 yen but the did not know the buses only stop every few hours. Although we had plans to see several of the best sites we only made it to Angel Road which is a 45 min ride from Fukado port. Angel Road is beautiful but underwhelming because it is so much shorter and smaller than it appears in photos. Additionally, the island is economically depressed. No where to eat! We had to pay another 8770 yen to avoid missing our ferry, NOT WORTH IT!
