Superb view from the top. There were 2 observatories which were close to the ropeway station. Even without much hiking, you can absorb all the amazing scenery. If i had been there in the summer, i would definitely walk through all the observatories.

Once you get to Kankakei Gorge, you should climb this mountain! It is about 45min to 1hour to summit and the view of Seto see is Amazing! This mountain used to be castle, therefore some heritages and shrines are remained. It is also cool!

Geologically amazing!

This famous tourist destination has a lot more to offer than just beautiful autumn colors. Its geological formation was made out of eruptions 13 million years ago. The rocks and granite you see between beautiful greens/autumn colors make this place very special, and it is no wonder this place has been selected as Japan's top 3 beauties of national valley.

If you like hiking, I suggest that you ditch the ropeway and walk to top of the ropeway and/or further out to the highest point of the island. There are three separate walks in the area according to Kankakei official website, and you can easily combine them to make it a half/full day hike.

1. Omote 12 Kei (Frontside 12 points of scenery) 1hr walk, intermediate level, 2km
Take a bus from Kusakabe Port to Kountei (bottom of the ropeway) on Kusakabe-Kankake route. Look for a trail on left side of the entrance to ropeway area. You will be walking in the shade most of the way. You will see 12 signs along the way, where you will see signage (sorry all in Japanese!), explaining how you can appreciate some rock formations from each point. This walk ends at Sancho eki, the summit station of the ropeway, where you see restaurants, souvenir shops etc.

2. Ura 8 Kei (Backside 8 points of scenery) 1 hr walk, intermediate level, 1.8km
Get off at Inotaniike, a stop before Kountei the last stop. When you get off the bus, the bus will take left road while you take the right. Go along the road and you will see 8 signs at each vista point. This walk also ends at Sancho eki, the summit station of the ropeway, where you see restaurants, souvenir shops etc.

3. Hoshigajo from the ropeway park area (the highest point) 1.5 hr walk, intermediate/strenuous, 2.3km
If you have not had enough of walk with No 1 or 2 trail, then you can continue to the very summit of the island, Hoshigajo. The walk is not as visible as the other two, but it is more like a real "hike" in my humble opinion. Enjoy the natural surroundings and very holistic feel because of its ancient history in the area.

The routes should be all straightforward, but I would use google map to make sure you have sufficient info on the route just to be on a safe side.

Also I would recommend that you check the bus timetable for your return, as the numbers of bus operating on this route is very limited. Enjoy!

Praised for view of Seto sea
Aug 2012 • Solo
A great view to see the grand waterway between significant Islands. Since Shodo Island been a Japanese site rather than int'l visitors's; there were least foreigners reaching the summit. But you can feel how touched deeply was when the locals stare at Seto Inland Sea there.

The pass toward the peak took about one hour, and there were several routes accordingly leading to the top, which consumed longer/shorter time by distances. If you are not check-in hotel on the Island, the count of time for being the summit is necessary. The ferry schedule must be checked, or you may stay one night on Island for missing aboard the last one. (Time taking Kankakei Ropeway and going out of mountain until you reach the main road must consider as well.)

Be careful of the monkeys walked around in all places! Don't underestimate the red face and rump creatures. They can be abnormally fierce and aggressive, especially in case that you have snacks on your hands.
