About
Do Yokai Exist or don’t they? Over 800 Yokai have gathered from around the world here in Shodoshima’s Yokai Art Museum. By listening to this guide which introduces everything from the origin of the Yokai, or Japanese monsters, to modern day Yokai, you will be left with a completely different image of what Yokai are. Yokai originated in the end of the Heian period, and are derived from the ancient Japanese concept of Animism. But just what are Yokai? Yokai are a source of fear, of comfort, of culture, of entertainment. Those kinds of discoveries lie waiting for you here.

Nice stroll

Had a great time wandering around to these galleries.

A few tips

One of the exhibitions is really dark. Wait for a minute or two at the entrance for your eyes to adjust before you wander around.

One of the galleries had nothing on display when we went. Check what current exhibits are running. There are two tickets and you might want to get the cheaper ticket.

Don't skip the puzzle or you can't go in the last space. Also be careful with the English on number four.

Japanese Art Pilgrimage
Jun 2014 • Family
Shodoshima, Japan is a little known place to people other than the Japanese. Some might say that it is one of the best kept secrets in Japan. I recommend a visit for anyone wanting an authentic Japanese experience that is a little more slow paced than what you will find in Tokyo. Shodoshima is well known among the art community for a triennial art competition that brings artists from all over the world. The atmosphere of art is thick on Shodoshima and there are hidden gems all over the island.
The most fantastic of these hidden gems is Meipam. Meipam has a cozy cafe that serves fresh coffee and home cooked Japanese food. But the real focus point of Meipam is their galleries. Meipam has several gallery locations in Tonosho. Each gallery has a unique personality from architecture to genre. One of my favorite Meipam displays is the room full of Yokai (Japanese ghosts) that were entries from a sculpture competition. The galleries of Meipam host artists from all over the world and you will find the same quality of art that you would in Tokyo. I want to recommend visiting Meipam for anyone thinking of studying Japanese art or thinking of making an art pilgrimage. I learned a lot about Japanese folklore on my visit. The galleries are regularly changing, so I am looking forward to what I will see next time I make it back.

Evoke the art of Shodo-shima

Whenever you thought of Japan, it will easily to come up with Tokyo, Kyoto, Onsen, Geisha, Tempura and Sushi? That is partially true but these places are beleaguered by worldwide strategized restaurants and shops which makes boring landscape at all.
Then where you can see real Japanese daily life.

I’ll definitely recommend you to explore yourself to Shido-shima which is located in the middle of ”Japanese” Mediterranean Sea called Setouchi-kai. Approximately 3hours from Tokyo and additional sea bus for an hour. 30,000 population island will gives you "prior to pollution” Japan life.

Take a good rest and enjoying local food then let’s get to “MeiPAM”.
MeiPAM is conceptually built to be connected real Japanese life / building architecture and modern att. Steel made monument will be existed beside of riveting art museum gallery. One is free up by young and energetic artist, another is museum of Japanese specter. Goblin will watching you.
