Highly rated by CNN - for good reason
Apr 2019 • Family
CNN has listed Ini-no-tanada in Akiota-cho Japan’s most beautiful places. The Japanese affinity for terraced rice fields in mountainous countryside can be best expressed here, with stair-like tiers along the slope, with stones and muds separating the sections. The way water comes to irrigate the Ini Tanada rice field is nothing but natural source directly from mountain valleys. Rice grown here, Ini-no-tanada-mai, is said to be some of Japan’s purest. A sought-after delicacy. Our family opted for driving, and it's probably the easiest way to get there. Worth the effort, especially you love photography. After this - if the weather is fine, of course - remember to have a detour and visit the adjacent Yasuno Hananoki Park. That's another gem.

Side trip from Sandankyo

Padi had already been harvested when we visited. The rice terraces are picturesque with hills in the background. However, they are small in comparison with those in Bali for instance.

Lovely rice fields all year round

Having lived in the area I visited these rice fields several times in different seasons. If you are around Hiroshima and want to see the traditional rice field terraces then I would recommend these. Great views, peaceful and quiet as it's not overrun with tourists, and plenty more to do in Akiota.
