Nice trail
Nov 2018 • Friends
We went there in the afternoon. Taking a bus from Misasa. There weren't many people taking the bus.

As it was autumn, weather was pretty cool to walk. We felt those tall trees..seem like the cartoon "My Neighbour Totoro". We loved this place.

And on way back to take the bus, there a photo stop after the open Carpark. Is for tourists to take picture of Mt Mitokusan.

challenging climb
Aug 2018 • Couples
At Mt. Mitoku you can climb up to Sanbutsu-ji. There is not much information online, at least not in English. Be aware that the climb is challenging, over roots, rocks and partly 90 degrees up clinging to a chain. All in all, until arriving at the peak shrine it takes about one hour. You are only allowed to go up if you are two or more. Have VERY good climbing shoes, no sticks, flexible clothing, wear gloves (would at least help), bring a towel, maybe spare t-shirt and take plenty to drink and/or energy drink or energy bar (1 l per person) as you'll probably sweat like mad. You can borrow straw shoes (was surprised how effective they are) but would prefer my own grip shoes next time.
It is definitely not a walk or an easy hike; it's doable, if you are prepared and equipped; plus the gate closes around 4.30 pm, so better do not leave later than 1 pm to avoid time pressure and you might like to enjoy the beautiful view, wondering how the monks were able bring up all the logs and build the shirnes hundreds of years ago without the help of machines.

Highlight of our trip
May 2018 • Couples
This was definitely one of the highlight of our trip. We took the 7:04 train from JR Tottori to JR Kurayoshi station which is about 30 mins. You can catch the first bus to Mt Mitokou at 7:45 at platform 3 right outside of the station. There are English signs. The price is 690 yen and we arrived at 8:20. Try to ask someone to write down the stop in Japanese just in case. Be sure to get a bus schedule at the tourist office. There are not too many buses that go there. Be sure to have the proper hiking wear like hiking boots, long sleeves shirt and hiking pant. You will get a bit dirty as you will need to do some difficult climbs and the path can be slippery. Oh wear gloves. I found the return trip to be harder then going up. Do Note, this is not a hike, it is a climb so you sure be fit. I was a bit nervous at the start as I was told it was a difficult climb. There were many times I have wondered how am I going to get up there but I was so glad I did and with no injuries. The views are stunning and if you like nature and up for a challenge don’t miss this opportunity.

Spiritual Nature
May 2017 • Friends
I had a chance to visit Mt. Mitoku one morning with my friends when we were staying one night at a Misasa Onsen ryokan end of May . This is a must-visit site and easy access by public bus.
We took the public bus near our ryokan at 09:59 and arrived by 10:14. We had to walk up very steep steps then we saw a small tea house then we took a little break and walk a little further up to the ticket counter. We were not hikers, so we just paid 400yen for the entrance to the foot of the mountain.
We saw very tall and big trees, these trees must be planted long time ago. The whole surrounding is some kind of a spiritual nature. There is a souvenir stall and we bought some boxes of sandal wood incense sticks. After spending some time taking photos, we walked down by another way (no steps) to the bus station and took the 11:40 bus back.
For those who want to hike up the Mitokusan Sanbutuji Temple, you need to be physically fit and dress up per their requirement.
Whether you want to hike or not, it is better to visit in the morning.

Hiking Mitokusan
Jun 2013 • Solo
A highlight of my 3-week trip from Hakodate down to Matsue. Be sure to go with someone or look for another solo hiker when you get to Mitokusan; they discourage solo hikers due to somewhat challenging/remote conditions. Fun trek and tremendous views. Remove your shoes when you get to the wooden structures and walk carefully around the edge. It's an incredible experience!
