Wakasa Railway, whose length is about only 19km, was established in 1930-1931. Its various facilities are all included in the registered tangible cultural properties of Japan. This railway is a living cultural heritage. The particularities of the facilities reflect well the climate, history and industries of the region and show how this railway has been used. If you take the train from Tottori station to Wakasa station, you can find the splendid changing landscape along the river from the dense city view, the well-cultivated rice fields, then rich fruits fields, well maintained forests, narrow valley with background of steep mountains and the train invites you finally to the scene surrounding the sacred mysterious mountain named Hyonosen. The name means the Icy mountain.
