Great beach, safe to swim and snorkel. Little evidence of the recent typhoon. We went mid-week so it wasn’t crowded at all.

The sand on this beach was imported from Australia. The sea wall is manmade. Walking along the beach, you will find that there are gloves, plastic, straws, cigarette lighters, and other odd pieces of garbage washing up on the sand. This worried us because we...More

We visited the beach several times while we were holidaying nearby. As a 'westerner' we found it fascinating. Almost everyone was under an umbrella, which was a great idea, given the heat. Also, the locals are fascinated with inflatable water toys. It doesn't matter how...More

Went there with a couple of friends to this beach. There was really nothing much to do here except enjoying the water and walk on the beach road, but we went to other nearby attractions before coming here. Nice way to spend a hot summer...More

I was really surprised. It was a hot weekend day, the sun was shining, and nearly no one was at the beach! Only a few people. And the beach is absolutely beautiful. Nice sand, no garbage...

The water is still too cool in mid-May for most people to go swimming, but the town is quiet before the summer rush and you can have the beach all to yourself.

Lovely white sand beach in downtown Shirahama. There are plenty of places to stay nearby and also a number of public hot spring baths to enjoy! Sunset here was beautiful.

Holding my wife’s hand and walking on the soft sand which we enjoyed our romantic moment. Shirahama beach is a pretty nice romantic beach and must spend 30min there for a little walk with your love.

We visited Shirahama in winter but still find this beach very beautiful and inviting. The water is clear and the sand is fine. It also a good walk along the beach on a nice day.

You may find this website helpful: type “visit wakayama plan your trip” into your search engine. Available in English. Good site for planning for trains and bus service.

Where to spend leftover days in Japan? (1 Replies)
Hi all, From August 1st until August 23rd, my girlfriend and I will be visiting Japan. We'll start in Tokyo where we'll stay for 5 nights to experience the city, and maybe do a few day trips to the surrounding places. After Tokyo, we'll head for Osaka to stay a total of 4 nights there, after which we'll stay for 5 nights in Kyoto. During the days in Osaka/Kyoto we'll be visiting Nara as well (day trip). However, after the above we still have a total of 5 days/nights left before we need...More

Two thoughts on alternatives to 'beaches': It is pleasant on the water. For example you could visit Naoshima. Further south there is a ferry service between Shikoku and Honshu that I have always wanted to take. Near the coast you may be lucky enough to go past fish and seaweed farms. 2. The Shinano Wide View Limited Express takes a delightful route from Nagoya along the Kiso Valley to Matsumoto and Nagano. On the way are old villages and opportunities to take the old road between villages.

(i posted in Takayama Forum too) Hi, we are an adventurous, active, budget conscious family of 4 (kids age 10 & 15) from Brooklyn, NY visiting Japan for our 1st time. We love nature, culture, history, food, art, swimming in the sea, baths/onsen/rotenburo, and off the beaten path travel. We will have 3 weeks (24 night to be exact) in Japan from Aug 11 – Sept 4. I know it a tough time given the Obon holiday and the hot humidity of summer with typhoons, but we will make the best of it. ...More

As you are going to Kyoto after Kanazawa, I think the routing would be better in this way. D1 Tokyo to Matsumoto (day trip to Matsumoto Castle) or Nagano (day trip to Zenko-ji) D2 Take JR+Bus (from Matsumoto) or Bus (from Nagano) to Ogizawa and start your trip to Alpine, stay in Toyama D3 Take JR to Hida Furukawa and Takayama (Stay in Takayama) D4 Takayama whole day D5 Shirakawago (Stay in Kanazawa) D6 Noto And take JR Limited Express Thunderbird to Kyoto

Hi, my wife and I are coming to Japan in August (using it to sweeten the pill of a "big" birthday) Aug 1-8th is spent in Tokyo, then off to Kyoto for 2 days, then we'd like to spend two days somewhere costal/beachy/seasidesu! etc before returning to Tokyo on the 13th to fly home the next day. We've been looking at Nanki Shirahama Beach (Wakayama) but are open to suggestions in that kinda of area (ie travel south from Tokyo to Kyoto then southish again to a costal area) Anyone have any...More

8 days in Tokyo and only 2 in Kyoto? I'd even out the days a bit eh - and think about visiting Osaka and Nara... Beach-wise - there aren't really tropical beach beaches along the stretch from Kyoto to Tokyo - and beaches/ beach culture is quite japanese... Have a think/ look around Enoshima perhaps... Otherwise, you might as well look at flying to Okinawa for a few days...
