We really enjoyed our stay at Fukuchiin. The temple and especially the gardens are amazing. The dinner was great and very traditional. In the evening we copied sutra and in the morning we visited the ceremony. A truely exceptional experience.

This was everything I had hoped it to be and more.

If you’re looking for a taste of tradition then this is where you’ll find it. The meals are 100% Buddhist-vegetarian and served in your room at a specific time.

The futons are rolled out after dinner, and the gate closes at 9pm. The staff were friendly and welcoming.

Morning prayer was at 5am. It’s optional so you need to go if you do not wish to, but it really is a profound experience so I’d definitely recommend going.

I loved it. A beautiful experience. Similar to a ryokan but more basic. I loved the onsen. My husband though struggled with the low doors, communal bathing and vegetarian meals. I guess it’s not for everyone, but I loved it.

After an interesting journey to actually get there, we were met cordially and given a basic tour of the premises - hot communal Onsen baths, prayer room with the monks - and then shown to our room. Dinner and breakfast were both served there and comprised tofu in abundance. Cafés in the town had a variety of non-vegan meals which were excellent. We slept well and everyone was lovely. We had to vacate the room by 9am or else pay extra. As someone who is not a Buddhist, I didn’t find the serenity mentioned in other reviews.

Koyasan is truly a magical destination, and a place I will most definitely return to. I stayed at the Fukushima-in Temple in the accommodation which is a part of the most peaceful location in Koyasan, the rooms are truly Japanese in style and makes the time there even more serine. The bath houses at the temple are very relaxing and the meals I had (breakfast and dinners) were absolutely brilliant. The temple is everything you could and would imagine and then more. The staff are so helpful and English is not a problem but of cause at least a few words of Japanese go a long way. I can not thank them enough for making my trip to Japan so memorable.

There is beautiful garden which you can see when you stay here. any visitor can't see it. Onsen is not really big but they have had two onsens in the temple.
The outside onsen will be opened from3pm to 9pm .
The location is close to other temple's and main street. Nice quiet place.
The temple staff speak English. She was really nice and helpful. If you book this shukubou, better to take a garden viwe room because they have beautiful garden.(Sinece It's fully booked,I couldn't take it )
I recommend to try shojin cuisine which doesn't use any meat ,egg, fish and daily products.

Our main reason for staying at Koyasan was to experience the tranquility of the buddhist monastic life and take a glimpse of their routine and beliefs. We were not satisfied in this as we found the workings to be mostly money-oriented and mass production repetitive activities (like charging for the privilege of being given a page with faintly printed sutras which you then get to copy over with a special pen OR charged for coffee-without as much as 1 complementary one- even though everybody pays the required accomodation fee)

On the plus side, our rooms were large, the dinner which was served in a different room for all 6 in our group was an interesting experience, the separate-gender onsen was intriguing , the actual building was old but well preserved with a tranquil garden.
Breakfast was a disaster as of course pickled fish and unusual vegetables cooked in imaginative ways is not everyone's idea for a good start first thing in the morning!
We got up very early for morning prayers - it was very cold and although we were fully dressed (no shoes) we were uncomfortable and left after 40 minutes or so. My conclusion is that all religions of today are similar, at least in the way performed by its representatives : incoherent repetitive chants, requests for donations and vulgarity in the excess of gold and precious metals used in the earthly representation of the Deity

The rooms were very large and comfortable.
Food was served in the room, it was a very fun and interesting experience! Unfortunately I couldn't eat a lot of the food-due to allergy I forgot to mention in advance, but the staff were amazing about it-went to the kitchen to find out what food was suitable for me.
The food was vegetarian and very unusual-definitely not going to be to everyones taste, but we really enjoyed trying everything!
The onsen were a highlight, the outdoor womens onsen was a delight!
Everyone was very friendly, and we really enjoyed the morning prayers-definitely worth getting up for.
The bus stopped almost right outside the door also which was very handy!

We actually stayed at this temple so definitely got the full experience. The gardens are stunning and the inside is fantastic, immediate recognition of a storied history with its creaky wooden floors and unique decor as soon as you enter. Definitely worth stopping in if walking by to other sights.

We stayed here one evening during a 3 week break in Japan. We had stayed in other ryokan during our stay but this place is an actual temple which adds to the experience. Meals are served in your room which is really nice. We enjoyed the evening meal but we're not so keen on the breakfast. There are onsen for men and women but no shared onsen and no option to book a private onsen which is a shame. The grounds and setting are very tranquil, there are wonderful gardens and you can join the morning ceremonies if you so desire
