We wanted to learn more about Koya san and decided to take the walking weekly tours, both the okuin 9 am and the 1 PM tour of the 2 other temples. Each tour is about 90 mins each.
We had in both cases Kodama san giving us the tour and we cannot recommend her highly enough. A woman who has a lot of knowledge of Koya san and its history, full of anecdotes and who cares for her guests.
We learned a lot and highly recommend taking these tours if you are in Koya san.

Inside the visitor center I met a wonderful person named Atsuyo Tanak.
I had the absolute pleasure of going on a hike through the mountains of Koyasan, Japan with KOYA Green Workshop. Atsuyo and her boss were my tour guides and Atsuyo spoke English very well.
It was truly a magical experience. The beauty of Koyasan is undeniable, but what made this hike exceptional was Atsuyo’s deep knowledge and passion for the area. She provided insights that truly enhanced the experience, making every moment even more special.
The hike was perfectly organized, and Atsuyo ensured that I felt comfortable at all times. Her expertise was evident in every detail. I can’t recommend this experience enough—everything was simply perfect!
Thank you so much Atsuyo Tanaka and to Koya Green Workshop!

We took a private tour organised through the Koyasan visitor information centre. We requested a look at some of Koyasan's lesser known temples and a hike through the surrounding countryside for 4 hours
Our guide was Shozo. Shozo was an amazing guide. He is a retired gentleman, who has clearly a passion for hiking. I believe this was the first hike that he had guided and he went to an exceptional amount of effort with maps, pictures, local history, religion - even some warm up exercises which we did with him to the amusement of some local tourists. Note that we are far from professional hikers, we are much more at home in the city and were not very fit. Shozo was very kind not to draw attention to this fact. No special hiking equipment was required - we wore our jogging shoes.
Shozo really did fulfil the brief, and we were delighted with him and the tour. It was 10,000 yen ($100 approx) for the two of us (total) and it was very much worth it. Shozo was very thoughtful, and brought along oranges, sweets and water to keep us full of energy. On the way back down we stopped to try some local sweets and a cup of tea.
The countryside around Koyasan is really beautiful. Shozo was an excellent guide. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend undertaking a hike and tour with Shozo.

Good walking tour with a woman who was deeply knowledgable about the religious aspects of the garan temple complex. It was very interesting and almost spiritual.
We took the 3 pm tour for 1.5 hours - well worth it.

Located very close to the main temples in Koya, this center is a welcoming spot for weary travellers to rest their feet and place their backpacks. The staff are trained in English too. Drinking water is available along with an open tent for seating where informative and interesting animated videos play to tell travellers more about the history of this place. The center offers free WiFi and this is a great place to grab a cup of coffee to rest before continuing the exploration of Koya.

There are 3 visitor information centers located around Koyasan town. The main center is at the main intersection in town – it offers free WI-FI. The other centers are located at either entrances to Okonoin. They have very helpful English speaking staff but I could only find one English document. The documents was very informative with pictures and I used that as my main guide around town

I rarely write reviews.
This tour is so good that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to thank Kaori San publically — and hopefully convince others to join her tours.
I took two tours by Kaori San, the 9am tour of Okunoin Cemetery and the 3:30pm tour of the other main temple areas (Garan and Kongobu-ji). As we walked through the cemetery, Kaori San explained its significance, main features, and even told interesting stories about some of the shrines. The experience was similar when we strolled through the other temple grounds.
What I appreciated the most, after having travels through Japan for five weeks, is the depth to which Kaori San went into to explain the various, complex facets of the religions/ faiths present at Koyasan. She not only answered my endless questions, but given her knowledge as a Nationally Certified guide, she also tied things together for me—referring to the things I had seen during my Kumano Kodo pilgrimage or my stay at Eiheiji temple.
This tour was not your typical Airbnb experience that’s focused on taking your picture and sharing laughs. This is a tour focused on real learning and understanding.
May I add that the Meditation at Kongobuji temple at 1:30pm was a great way to get even more knowledge of Shingon Buddhism (the Monk who led it spoke great English as he had been in Hawaii) and eating at Kadohama was delicious. Perfect day.

We went on a tour of the temples with Midori. It was raining heavily but we were keen to do a tour. I was surprised the tour wasn’t cancelled as the weather was terrible and if I had been a tour guide I would definitely have cancelled. But the team were keen to help. The tour was really informative and interesting. It definitely enhanced the experience of seeing the temples. Highly recommended.

We visited this location and hired the services of two of the tour guides. Very worthwhile, especially the cemetery tour.
