It's said that if you are not called by the gods of Tamaki Shrine, even if you have made plans to go, you may not be able to do so. It's reported to be the oldest shrine in Japan, and despite the winding road and 20 minute walk to reach the main shrine, it's worth visiting.

The fall colours were in full display. Photographic opportunities were plentiful.

There was construction going on, and beside it were toilet facilities.

At the car park were a few stores where one could grab a bite.

It's a long long way to reach because this sacred place has been worshipped by only a few, and not so many visit even today. Surrounded by deep forest, actually in mountains, hidden place but worthy to visit if you wish to feel some old sacred energy preserved for a long time in Japan.

Nice drive to get up the hill to the shrine, nice walk to the shrine and very interesting place. It is a Shinto Shrine, but if you appreciate architecture and nature, you will love this place.

My grandson and I followed our guide up the long pleasant walk and steps to the Shrine. On our tour we were not allowed to go into the shrine so it was just the walk and the guides lecture. Hopefully your guide will be easier to understand. As with many Nara attractions the park contains many small deer to see and feed.

It's really a beautiful shrine to feel nature, culture and history. Don't forget to hike up to Tamaishisha. If sky is clear, you can see the ocean from the shrine and the top of Mt. Tamaki.
