Breathtaking views and amazing experience in Dorokyo gorge. Amazing boat trip in such a untouched nature. We even managed to see the baby wildboar and the snake. Definitely worth to visit!

The boat trip is around 2 hours including a stop for 20 minutes. It takes you up into the gorge where there are interesting rock formations, pillars and cliffs. The water is a very interesting blue colour. There is an English brochure explaining what you are looking at.

My only complaint is that there’s not enough lunch food to take along the boat ride. While there’s a restaurant at the boat centre it’s sit down only, no take away. The gift shop has lots of souvenir boxes of food but nothing practical or sustaining.

The stop over has nowhere to sit and eat while you gaze at the view although there’s a photographer waiting to take your photo. I can’t help feeling they could make a better travel experience for their customers somehow with better Food offerings.

The driver of Kawasemi tour boat throttled the engine back and watched as the boat approached a rapid. We couldn't see what lay in store for us on the rapid but the susurration of the river grew louder every moment. Just as the rapid came into review revealing a tongue of quick water, the driver gunned the engine and we surged forward over the rapid.
The Doroyo is the Grand Canyon of the Kumano - Kumano Yoshino National Park. It was carved by the Kitayama River a tributary of the Kumano River and is one of the most awesome places to go for a boat ride or a hike, or to throw in a line and go fishing (or find a safe pool and swim). This 31km long gorge offers many other outdoor surprises that all revolve around nature

This tour can be taken using a taxi from the nearby town of Shingu. It is a pleasant 40+ minute power boat ride along a fast flowing river to get into the gorge, you then have some time cruising slowly through the gorge looking at rocks that purport to look like animals, a stop at the top and then return again through quite beautiful countryside. A very pleasant trip spoiled only by very uncomfortable seating in the boat

2 hours cruising down the stream of Oku-Kumano was very pleasant and scenic. there are 8 rocks to look out for, but its hard to understand when you reach them since the announcements are made in Japanese, so best to go with a Guide who can point them out to you. There is one stop the boat makes where you can purchase some Japanese snacks, basic souvenirs and use a restroom.
