If you have enjoyed the movie My Neighbour Totoro and other films from Studio Ghibli you will love this place. It is a recreation of the home of Mei and Satsuki in the movie. It is in the middle of parkland so that it has the countryside feel of the house in the film. All the little details are just right with the little shoes that the children wear in the movie sitting in the cupboard and all the evidence of the way things were done at that time. As a foreigner I still recognised many of the types of objects and ways of doing things from when I was small. My grandchildren, who enjoy the movie, were delighted with the house and had fun pretending they were like Mei and Satsuki. The house is located a pleasant train ride from Nagoya (about 25 mins on the Higashiyama subway line then 12 mins on the Linimo) in the very large Aichi 2005 Expo park. The expo site has some information on how to get there http://www.expo2005.or.jp/en/ticket/index.html. You will need to come out of the subway and go into a different station to get the Linimo. Once at the park follow the signs to catch the free shuttle bus as it is a good 20 minute walk to the house. You can find the bus timetable here http://moricoro-park.com/riyouannai/bus/. We walked back from the house to the train to enjoy the park rather than risk missing our tour time by walking on the way to the house. It is advisable to book tickets in advance (you can do this through the Loppi at the Lawsons but it is quite tricky), otherwise if they are not too busy you can buy a ticket near the house site where you hand in your prepurchased tickets. In Japanese the attraction is called satsukitomeinoie which is spelled like this サツキとメイの家. The young people at the Lawson helped us buy our tickets but even they found it a bit tricky. Tours are timed and you have about 15 minutes to explore the house and 15 minutes to explore the garden. However tour groups are small so we found that we had enough time to enjoy ourselves. The tour guide speaks mainly Japanese but since you are mostly free to explore by yourself and an English information sheet is provided, it doesn't really pose a problem. More information on the attraction, including times of tours etc can be found here http://moricoro-park.com/shisetsu/satsukitomei/. I am astonished that this fantastic attraction doesn't get more attention. As noted by other reviewers the park contains other amusements such as a swimming pool and ice rink and there are nice park areas to stroll through. If you take your towel and swimsuit (and even if you don't use the pool) Moricoro Park would be a great place for a day out, especially with children.

This is the dream of every Totoro fan to visit the house the story played. The house is in a big park near Nagoya, if you are travelling to Nagoya from somewhere else you can easily make your way to go through here with minimal extra cost. The house itself is a 20 minute walk from the closest station. If you need information how to get there at the entrance of the park there is a little Totoro store and they are happy to give you a map and tell you the instructions (japanese only) but it's quite hard to miss since there are clear signs all along they way. Make sure to follow the signs or you can get lost easily.
You can only visit the house with guided tour (japanese only) but I would recommend it even if you don't speak japanese because they are used to foreigners and hand out an english explenations paper to you (entrance fee is 500-600 yen). There is a tous in every half an hour usually but it can change depending on the number of visitors. The tour is half an hour long: 15 minutes outside and 15 minutes inside. I think it's enough time. You can't take photos inside so make sure to get all the photos from outside, like in the bus stop, at the well or sitting on the porch of the house!
The house is as authentic as it can be. It looks just like how it looked in the movie! Don't forget to look for the door leading to the attic!
You can open the drowers and look into all the little hidden places to find Satsuki and Mei's hats, sandals and bed sheets.
It really looks just like in the movie!
I only wish they would have a huge Totoro tree as well!

You have to get tickets from Lawsons Convenience store. From Nagoya station Take Higashiyama line to last station in the East, Fujigaoka station. Then take the Linomo Monorail to Aichikyuhaku-Kinen-Koen. Give yourself at least 90mins for this journey because its a bit of a walk from the station, through the park, to the house. The park is beautiful and you can pick acorns just like Satsuki and Mei. Do climb to the observation tower after visiting the house to take some amazing aerial photos of the house and the surrounding park.

Satsuki and Mei's House
Definitely come here if you are a Studio Ghlibi fan, are visiting Nagoya and love "My neighbour Totoro". If you have not heard of this anime movie, don't bother reading on.
This is an exact replica of Satsuki and Mei's House. It is in Aichi Commenorative Park, site of the 2005 World Expo. Catch the Higashiyama subway line from Nagoya to the end of the line, Fujigaoka (30min) , then catch the Linimo (magnetic train) to Ai Chikyuhaku Kinen Koen station (2 stops before the end) takes about 15 min and the park is right outside the station. The house is in the middle of the park about a 15 min walk and all signposted. Cost is ¥500 per person and opening times are 10.30, 11.30, 12.30, 1.30pm and 2.30pm. Our travel agent booked the tickets but you may be able to purchase them there at the park, there were only 6 people in our group, but the following group had about 10. They limit the no of visitors as the house is not very big and takes approx 30-40min to view.
Even if you are not fan and are visiting the Park anyway, this is a fantastic replica of a 1960's Japanese rural house.

This is a must for Ghibli fans, even if you only get 30 minutes wandering through the house and garden. It feels like the family just stepped out for a few minutes and will be back at any time. We rolled up early in the day after taking the subway and linimo mag lev train (Higashiyama subway line from Nagoya to Fujigoaka, limino to Aichikyūhaku-kinen-kōen). We got tickets for the tour, no trouble at all. After the tour we visited the very scenic Japanese gardens before heading back to Nagoya. We walked across the park, but I would take the shuttle bus in hot weather as there is no shade.

For Ghibli fans, a trip to Satsuki & Mei's house is a truly magical experience.
We made no prior reservations, simply arrived around 12.10, booked tickets at the window for the 12.30 tour, and waited with those already there. We travelled during off-peak season and the rest of the park was mostly empty.
The tour itself was very thorough; staff were dedicated and professional, yet were all interested in where we were from, and took photos for us! It was explained to us that it was all in Japanese, and they gave us an English explanation flyer. We enjoyed the tour of the house and were able to take lots of photos outside...my kids particularly loved being able to pick up the bucket near the well and exclaim 'What a stupid bucket'! Inside is so detailed and we really felt like we were part of the film, but no sign of Totoro or any soot sprites.
Across the little bridge is a good photo area, but also an oval-shaped 'planted' spot where the kids pretended to encourage the acorns to grow.
The park itself is quite large with other areas to explore, so allow enough time to do so. If you have at least half a day of free time in the Nagoya area and you have kids, it's worth a visit. We took the train & Linimo from Nagoya station, as described in other reviews.

Satsuki and Mei's house is located in Nagoya which is approximately 2 hours from Osaka via shinkansen-bullet train. It is great to see the actual house built based upon the animation movie. Being a huge fan, I was really excited to visit their home hoping to see Totoro as well. We rode a Linimo monorail train to the World Expo and rode the free bus passing near the attraction. We walked a good 5 minutes from the bus stop to the ticketing office. There is a time limit to the visit so be sure to not wander around the park as it is also easy to get lost with all the beauty.
There is a mini talk by the staff prior to entering the house probably explaining the rules and some etiquette. It is in Japanese though. They try to speak in English anyway when asked.
We went during the spring so the weather is nice and cool to just get lost around. It maybe a challenge to visit on summertime.

We finally made it to Satsuki and Mei's House, a replica of the one in the movie My Neighbour Totoro. We have been wanting to visit the house since we first learnt of its existence and we are extremely glad we did. It’s such an adorable little house! Our four year old daughter is also a massive Totoro fan. It was well worth the trip just to see her face light up as she ran around exploring. The thirty minute tour felt a little too short in my opinion. I wish we were awarded more time to explore the property especially given the attention to detail. If you’re a Totoro fan it is well worth a visit! Lileen

This was truly a magical experience. The tour takes you to the house, and lets you explore it for a set amount of time. I think it's usually 30-40 minutes, but because it was winter and there were less attendees, they had extended the time to 50 minutes.
The attention to detail in the house is just amazing. And the fact that you can open most of the drawers and cupboards (in fact it's encouraged, they give you a sheet of things to look for as you go through), it just so much fun. The tour guide also pointed out some little design aspects of the house that were added in the spirit of the film, but weren't actually part of the film itself.
Personally, having been to the ghibli museum twice, this was so much more magical, a truly wonderful experience.
Not the most convenient of locations, but if you're spending at least a day in Nagoya, then this is worth half a day. To guarantee a spot on the tour, get tickets beforehand at Lawson Loppi machines.
If you're a ghibli fan, and especially a Totoro fan, then this is the place for you. You won't regret it.

The house is a replica of Mei and Satsuki's house in the Miyasaki movie "My Neighbor Totoro." You can take a tour of the house (the guides only speak Japanese, though) and the rooms are full of antiques and books that you can browse (but you are not allowed to take photos inside the house.) The house is located in the Japanese garden of the beautiful Morikoro park. Morikoro park was the site of the Aichi World Expo 2005 and it houses an ice-skating rink, indoor waterpark, bicycle path and many other attractions.

Hello, anybody can tell us how fast one can get to Satsuki and Mei's House getting off from the Nagoya airport? Is there a shuttle bus we can take from the airport to Aichi? or even more direct to the Aichi Expo Park?
