About
Murododaira is located at an altitude of 2,450m, it is the center of the Alpine Route and a tourist base. There are magnificent mountains in front of you and a walking path is also in place. You can see beautiful “Mikurigaike Pond” the deepest alpine lake in the Japanese Alps, and “Hell Valley” where you can see volcanic activity. You should feel wonderful nature with great force. Murododaira is covered with snow until June, so you had better to bring snow boots to walk around.

Setting-off relatively early on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route to visit Kurobe Dam in late July, I was a little un-nerved to observe that most of my fellow passengers on the Tateyama Highland Bus from Bijodaira to Murodo were dressed in "all-weather" gear. I, on the other hand, was dressed expecting warmer weather. All was revealed on arrival at Murodo, when just a few passengers moved forward to catch the Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus, whereas the "all-weather" travellers headed off in the opposite direction for a days' hiking from Murodo.
Murodo is located at an elevation some 1,000m higher than Kurobe Dam, so there is a considerable difference in the respective temperatures between the two locations. Returning to Murodo in the early afternoon, the low cloud had lifted and with less incentive to join the queue for the returning Highland Bus, I was able to venture outside and view the impressive scenery.

Murododaira is a highlight of Kurobe Tateyama alpine route and the final destination of many tourists. Panoramic view of mountains covered with snow is beyond description. It is amazingly beautiful. Such a scenery is like that of Switzerland or Canada. Good is that it is easily accessible for everyone. If you walk around just Murododaira, you don’t need special equipment.

I went there on 26 Oct and there is no red leaves but the transport throughout the Tateyama-Kurobe alpine route is very smooth.
Apart from the very popular ropeway I got a comfortable seat on all other 5 transports.
I started from Tateyama at ~9am and finished my one way trip at Ogizawa at ~1730. I spent ~1.5 hr for a walk at murododaira (the short course) and the scenery is great~make sure you finish your stroll before noon time in order to avoid the big crowd.
The course was easy to walk with nicely paved boardwalks and steps and you dun need hiking gears. I just walk with my sneakers. You may get some wet mud on your shoes if you went to the lookout for the “hell valley”.
