About
Kurobe Lake is a lake dammed by the Kurobe Dam. You can walk along with looking at the beautiful emerald green lake. There is also a walking path along the lake that is not well known. The walking path is accessible near pleasure boat "GARVE" entrance. Walking there is good to avoid crowds and enjoy nature. Especially, autumn leaves are wonderful!

The emerald color lake surrounded by Tateyama Mountain range attracts tourists from Spring to Autumn
May 2018 • Couples
Kurobe Lake is a water reservoir and a part of Kurobe River that collected melted snow from Japan’s Northern Alpine Mountain range. In the late 19th to early 20th century this area was still a remote mountain region that was difficult to explore, and its nature resource was left unused until tunnels were built, and transportation systems were available. The early explorations of nature resource in this area found the high volume of snow melted water was powerful enough to generate electricity supplies to the region. Kanden Electric Power Company brought in workers, dug tunnels through the mountains and built the water dam along with hydro-electric power plant. The arch shape dam sits above the emerald color lake water is the first sightseeing spot into the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. During the Spring lake water is calm; visitors can see the reflections of the surrounding greenery mountains, clouds and sky on the lake surface. Sightseeing boats are available during the tourist seasons. Visitors can go up to the Dam’s observatory or just cross over Dam’s bridge for the breathtaking views of the Lake and surrounding area. During the summer when water volume is at its highest level, dam will be opened and discharging excess water to the lower level which creates magnificent views of rainbow effects and powerful roaring waterfall. In the Fall season the surrounding mountain forests bring vibrant colors of autumn foliage symmetrically reflecting onto the lake surface like a piece of water-color painting. To reach here the only mean of transportation is by Kanden Tunnel Trolley Buses offered by the operator of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The travel season is from early April to the mid-November.
