Went for the cherry blossom festival in early March and we were lucky to catch it in full bloom. Due to the virus, the park was not very crowded. We also hiked up to another area which has more cherry blossoms and canola flowers (extra charge to go in). It was very beautiful and definitely worth coming. There were also some stalls selling snacks. I recommend the sakura mochi soft serve ice cream!
Take the odakyu line from Shinjuku and you will reach Matsuda town in about 90 minutes.

Pick a clear Blue sky to go here. You will see some great colors of the trees and Mt Fuji and the surrounding areas. This park offers lots of paths to walk and a miniature railway for the kids as well.

On the side of the hill about 15 walk from the Shin-Matsuda station (Odakyu). This has a bus that runs to and from the station. Nice trails to hike up to and past the main building.

There was an entrance fee during the cherry blossom festival, but the cherry blossoms were already almost gone in spite of the festival period…
Our child was looking forward to the steam locomotive and the slide, so we went there all the way and took 3 hours to get there and back. But the tickets for the locomotive were sold out. They have a Twitter account but didn’t inform any of the information about it.
And what's worse, although the old man in charge of the locomotive said "It’s fine if it’s just the kid. I’ll give your kid the ride” at first, he changed his mind halfway through (perhaps because the parent was a foreigner) and shouted "No! Only elementary school students and older! Your kid can’t get on!”
It was written on the official website that "children under 3 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian," at that time and since my son was older than that, there was no problem about age (as shown in the picture: the part of the red line).
So we pointed it out after that and then, the old man replied "That is the website's fault! I don't know anything about it, so don't make such an accusation!”
...Not only he told a lie, but also he hasn’t even understand the rules set by his own workplace, even though he works here. Furthermore, he shifted the blame to other workers and called it a "false accusation" even though we told him the truth.
We do understand it’s inevitable that the tickets would be sold out, but what the old man did is too irresponsible, capricious and selfish.
And if we could know the tickets were sold out, we would not have gone to the trouble of paying for the park although the cherry blossoms were green, and even if the locomotive tickets were sold out.
Afterwards, he halfhearted apologized for making a slip of the tongue and calling our accurate information a “false accusation," but he just kept quibbling about his lies and shifting of responsibility.
We had no choice but to talk to the town hall staff later and told him the whole story.
The person in charge at the town hall understood the situation and apologized about the old man’s behavior. And he told us that they would immediately make improvements, such as changing the description on the website and updating the tickets information about sold-out on Twitter.
(Now it’s changed to “children under elementary school students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.”)
As with any place you work, each person is the face of the facility or the company if you have to take care of the visitors. By how you treated them, not only it affects the impression for the visitors, but it will also lead to the facility's or company's profits. Depending on whether or not the customer will have pleasant memories and want to use the facility or product again, or whether they will never use it again, it makes a significant difference.
It is outrageous that shouting out false information or shift the blame.
Every workers should understand and care about how to take care of the visitors, especially if the place is introduced as a tourist attraction.
Overall:
・There are many hills on the way from the station and in the park, making it tough for the elderly and small children (even healthy adults get quite tired),
・The facilities are old and outdated,
・The slides are located in the middle of narrow paths on steep slopes, and in some places they are only blocked by ropes or cones, so it’s quite dangerous for small kids (Our friend’s child slipped and rolled down the slope)
・If it’s cherry blossoms or herb season, it has some thing to see, but other than that, there is nothing to see so much, so I think it’s not worth paying the fee to come all the way from far away.
There were people who brought suitcases from overseas and it seemed really tough, so if you are coming from far away, I recommend you should consider this point as well.
