One of the best beaches I have been to in Japan. Good surf and friendly locals. There are designated swimming area's patrolled by lifeguards 8July-24 August. The beach in Onjuku (about a mile long) is divided into three sections north side (Iwawada) is good for families with Kids as the waves tend to be smaller there. The middle (chuo) is a surf beach and has decent waves for board surfing and bodysurfing (Beware of rip currents and follow the direction of Lifeguards) and the South end (Hama) is also a quiet beach with decent surf. Onjuku's main drawcard is its easy access from the train station to the beach about a 10 minute walk and its golden sand and clear water is almost identical to an Australian beach. There are several decent local restaurant's in the area. The beach crowd is a mix of Tokyo day trippers,Local surfers and a few foreigners.

The sleepy town of Onjuku is a quick 1.5hr train ride away from Tokyo. The town is most famous for its beach - especially in the summer when it becomes a paradise for surfers. A quick visit to the beach and neighbouring fishing village Katsuura (which has a spa hotel where you can try a variety of onsen, even just as a day guest) offers a great day trip away from the hustle of Tokyo.

Very nice beach.
Nearby is good onsen with black water.
Enjoy beach, play volleyball (net on beach) then do BBQ and relax in onsen.

It is far from Tokyo, but definitely worth the journey. It has a friendly vibe, the sand is (relatively) garbage-free, the water is clear and clean; and there are almost no beach house, which means that you can enjoy the sound of waves, as opposed to tacky eurobeat blaring from some beach-house's speakers (Zushi beach anyone??).

Onjuku beach is famous for Tsuki no sabaku statue. it's located 100km from Tokyo. you can take Train , bus or car. it takes 10mins walk from Onjuku station (JR) to the beach. I think that Onjuku beach is one of beautiful beach near Tokyo. You can enjoy beautiful white beach, clean water. These days many tourist from overseas come to the Onjuku beach, so I feel like I am in Hawaii or Australia. Also you can enjoy surfing, beach volleyball.
You can drink alcohol on the beach and enjoy fresh vegetable and fish at restaurant.

Plenty of room for even the amateurs; everyone is so nice. Even though there were so many people in the water, there was such a good vibe.

Nice place but not great for a day trip if you can't get out of the sun.
No umbrella hire this time of year, yet still plenty of sun.
Wanted too hire sup , but told we don't do it anymore (Sumo Surf), shame,as the wave is really suited to a sup.
Ideal place for an overnighter as a break from Tokyo.

Enjoying right now, nice beach and ambiance, big waves, clear water but due to typhoon, waves are rough. Wish the ocean be calm so that we could enjoy more. Be back next time.

This is a beach close to Tokyo but still you need a car. It is a very wavy beach. Mainly Japanese youngsters.
