I first went here about 6 years ago. Now anytime Im in Japan I try to make it to Onjuku and rent a board from Eugene. He is a friendly, warm guy from Hawaii who hangs out surfing, fishing and renting boards and wetsuits. I usually call or email ahead but I don't think you have to in the summer. Eugene has nice boards and wetsuits along with a warm shower and changing/ locker spaces.
There is a cool shrine to a shipwreck on the mountainside above the shop and it is a very short walk to the beach where there is a shower to rinse under and some vending machines. In the summer there are full on beach houses with food, beer and ice cream. Across the street from the shop is great little noodle house. (You have to buy drinks other than beer from the vending machine).
Getting here from Onjuku station is best done by taxi. There is a bus that drops you down the road from the shop, but it is sometimes a wait. In the summer my son and I have gotten rides from other surfers who are leaving at the same time we are.
This beach doesn't get insanely crowded in the summer like some of the other Chiba destinations.
Onjuku has a beach beak with a wide area of rideable waves depending on the swell.
