You can't see the entrance from the road, a real hidden Gem. Founded in 1309, this Zen Temple has a Gunma Cultural Property Mon (Gate, 1775) with a Stunning Painting of a Celestial Maiden on the Ceiling. Inside the temple are other paintings of a Dragon, and a Pheonix surrounded by intricate, hand-carved woodwork famous in the area. We especially loved the old "Door Knocker"-haven't seen one like it before.
The pathway up crosses a creek, surrounded by Hydrangea Bushes (May) under a canopy of Momiji Trees (autumn). There is a path to the side of the many, steep stairs leading to the Gate, but just remember that the painting is up there to be seen!

This is a beautiful temple complex, almost out of sight, slightly overgrown, with a serene, tranquil aura. It envelopes you with its centuries-old stillness. A walk there, even on a rainy day, puts you in a magical place and replenishes your soul - if you want it to.
It's about 2km from Takumi-no-sato bus stop. To experience the full bloom of the hydrangeas visit in July.
