100-Day Maitake Mushrooms! Delicious! A favorite of Sumo Wrestlers-seen on TV! The Center has developed a slow-growing process to increase the chemicals that might help fight cancer& lower blood pressure & blood sugar levels. You can see the maitake growing in their sterile shelves and sometimes there are tours.
Also, the shop in another building will give you maitake teas, soup, pickles to try so you will buy. Also found Tabasco Spicy Shoyu-that should be fun!
My tip* If it isn't maitake for a present, then just buy them in the sack, much cheaper. They are really good just sautéed in butter or in a hot pot. I like in spaghetti.
Maitake is named "hen in the woods" because it is supposed to look like the feathers of a ruffled chicken. But "take" means mushroom and the character for Mai is 'to dance'. My husband says when you find a maitake you are so happy you begin to dance. Doesn't know if that's true or not....
Enjoy...
