The best time to go to Rausu's seaport is early morning when the fishermen bring in their catches. You can watch them empty the nets and see the types of fish that are caught in the extremely fertile area between Rausu and Kunashiri Island. If you are lucky you might even meet some fishermen who have been across the line into the Russian occupied Japanese Northern Territories. This is the second time I have been here. The first time (1988) I also visited the Rausu fishing cooperative and chatted with fishermen about the politics of the occupied islands and how strict the Russians were about fishing over the centre line between the Shiretoko Peninsula and the islands. Amazingly quiet. Hardly a person in sight when we vsited. Not a great deal to see either. We struggled to find a cafe.

Took a boat from the seaport and fed the eagles. Had hoped to see the sea icebut because of the warmth, it was not possible. however the eagles were all around and were magnificent birds.
