Watch out for the wildlife along the way!

Very good experience driving up the highway, especially around the Pass area. Saw a bear, a male deer and some birds (see pictures)!

Amazing road

Definitely need to drive on this road if you're driving in Eastern Hokkaido. Lots of twists and turns, very enjoyable road.

Great view out towards Kunashiri
Sep 2018 • Couples
The highway, or pass, connects Utoro with Rausu. It's a very pleasant drive, maybe taking 40 minutes. There is a stop area with a great view over the landscape and we were quite lucky to have a clear view of Kunashiri.

Beautiful scenery
Jul 2017 • Solo
It is the only road connecting Rausu and Shiretoko. The road is closed during late autumn and winter, that means buses between these two places only run in summer time.

You can see Rausu mountain and Kunashir (国後島) when the sky is clear.

Breathtaking view..

You can see the sea and mountainous region and a stop over if you have children, between the shiretoko and Rausu.

From sea to shining sea

The highway connects Rausu with Shiretoko's Utoro, so you can drive up one side and at the top, if your weather cooperates, see a beautiful view in both directions. Regardless, this highway connects two superb parts of Hokkaido, so take a chance an duse it as a link.

Key to Shiretoko
Oct 2016 • Couples
This is a beautiful drive from Rausu to Utoro with access to the five lakes and further north into the Shiretoko National Park on the western side. The road surface is fine and there are some points where you can let faster local traffic through with a very large observation area at the top of the pass. The pass closes in November for a number of months so access is only during the warmer parts of the year. We drove through on a relatively clear day with cloudless sunny skies and the views from the observation area were breathtaking. There are toilets there should you need them on the drive across. I can't imagine that you would stay in either Rausu or Utoro and not cross the pass but it is an essential component of this beautiful part of the north of Hokkaido.

Highway 334 - Crossing the Shiretoko Peninsula between the towns of Rausu and Shari
Jul 2016 • Couples
We drove from Rausu over Highway 334 to Shari in July. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful day for this 30 km plus driving. The road is well-maintained and excellent. Halfway of the route is the Shiretoko Pass. Unfortunately, by the time we reached the pass, mist started to settle in the pass area and we were unable to have a view of Kunashiri Island. We couldn’t see the nearby mountain peaks, either. Yet the feeling of being there was very, very good.

We saw several photographers at the parking lot of the Shiretoko Pass. They were waiting for the right moment to shoot some rare birds coming to the centre stage for them. No, we didn’t see them and didn’t want to wait for them as it was very windy.

We drove down from the pass to the side of the town of Shari. Instead of going straight to the town site, we chose to drove to the Shiretoko Goko (five lakes) region. We spotted several local deer along the highway.
