Must see for history buffs - Beside the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park
May 2017 • Friends
Those who are interested in the colonization of Hokkaido and who can read Japanese will find this museum a gem. It details three tondenhei settlers who migrated to Hokkaido from mainland Japan when the Meiji government shut down the feudal system and repurposed samarai warriors to farmers in the newly colonizing Hokkaido. These warrior farmers were sent to Hokkaido not only to colonize it, but allso to protect Hokkaido from Russian incursions. The second floor of the museum shows how these warriors were assigned farm land through a lottery system once they and their families were already on ships from the main islands of Japan. It traces their activities in sodbusting and through the Russo-Japanese war of 1905. On the first floor is a memoriall hall with portriats of all the military officers, a representative tondenhei house, and other memoribilia from the colonization of Hokkaido. Worth an hour if you are in the area. Use the same parking lot as is used for the Tulip Park.
