Once you reached the top, the view was fantastic. However, there's a price to pay.
Before you reach there, you need to navigate a 5km stretch of gravel / dirt road, where only a single car can pass. There are some spots where two cars can barely go through. Very skilful and careful driving is required, as one single of the road is the hill and he other side is the hill cliff. I was fortunate that during my drive up and down, there was no cars coming from the opposite direction. Else, guess one party needs to reverse

We had hit lucky with the weather, a Sunday in early October, and it was blue skies and warm on the north east cost of Hokkaido. We were travelling from Abashiri to Shiretoko so this was out of our way, but in view of the lovely weather we continued along the coast for as long as we could justify before turning around to retrace our steps through Abashiri towards Shiretoko.

The road up to the Lake Saroma Observatory approaching from the east is partly a gravel road once you turn off the main road and mainly single track with passing spaces. Given that it was dry weather our 2WD saloon car was able to get up the road without any issue, however drivers who are not confident on narrow unpaved country roads might want to consider their options.

However the reward when you get up the top with some good weather is stunning with a clear view over the entire expanse of the lagoon of Lake Saroma. There is small car park which has a very basic chemical toilet and from there you have 2-3 mins of steps that lead up to a small unstaffed exhibition building and steps again from there onto the viewing platforms arranged alongside and on the roof of the exhibition place where you can get your view across the lagoon. The platform and exhibition hall are all modern and well built.

We hadn't planned to venture quite as far as Lake Saroma, but with the beautiful weather we were handsomely rewarded. I hope my review and photos can help you make your mind up to visit this observation post.
