Thank you very much for 6 days of discovery in hokkaido. I saw magnificent landscapes in a sumptuous natural setting. And more than that, I opened up to new Japanese and Ainous cultures while meeting interesting and kind people. The organization was top-notch. I recommend it for anyone who wants to discover this beautiful region.

Excellent day spent with Sumi hiking through untouched snow, then bathing in the open air onsen surrounded by snow. An unforgettable experience, would highly recommend

My 20 year old son and I have just returned from our fun day out with Sumi.
She picked us at the hotel and dropped us off at the end. She is a “local” speaks great English and has almost all the answers !
We parked up in the road rest area got kitted up, and hiked off into the woods. The snow was deep and fun to mess around in. Little sign of other people which was nice. After a hot tea and sweets we hiked back. Sadly we saw no animal life except rabbit tracks.
I suggest that you do this trip BEFORE going skiing/ snowboarding as a great intro to the hills/trees/snow etc.
DO NOT MISS the Onsen. A truly classic wonderful relaxing and strangely “normal” experience.
Thanks Sumi

I am frankly surprised that there aren't more reviews for this excellent hiking tour led by Ms. Sumi of Hokkaido Private Adventure. It's a really great way for novices to experience the winter landscapes of Sapporo in a relaxed but still challenging way, especially if you and your family are still working up the courage to go skiing or snowboarding.

It's best to be prepared with water and wind proof gear, but Ms. Sumi can help with anything you might by lacking, That ensures that you're less worried about surviving and can focus more on the great views of snow-covered birches and rolling terrain. Enjoy sinking into the unpacked snow and learning how to get your legs under you. Surprisingly challenging and engaging.

Ms. Sumi is a great guide and you can tell her how much adventure you're up for. She's extremely comfortable in English, and she brings with her the experience of growing up in Hokkaido. She brings a lot of the fun in the hiking tour.

There is supposed to be an onsen at the other end of all the shivering in the forest, but we couldn't work our courage up for that. I am sure it would be a perfect counterpoint to walking in the snow.

We had great views of the Moss Canyon and Shikotsu lake in the fall. Yumi-san is an amazing guide who speaks perfect English. The scenic drive was about 1 hr long from Sapporo and well worth the visit.

Amazing experience! Our guides Sumi and Taki picked my wife and I up from our hotel in Sapporo promptly at 9 AM and took us to an air conditioned vehicle with water for each of us. During the hour long car ride to Lake Shikotsu, both Sumi and Taki entertained us by asking us where we were from and telling us about their life and about different sights in Hokkaido. Time flew by pretty quickly and we soon arrived to the moss canyon location.

The hike to the canyon itself was about 10 minutes and was very easy with no inclines at all. It was also very beautiful on the way to the canyon. The day before the hike it had rained, so a lot of the plants and moss were very green. In addition to the scenery there were many birds and wildlife out.

The 4 meter tall canyon itself was spectacular. It had many different kinds of moss growing on both sides and a bunch of other flowers and mushrooms growing on the dead trees surrounding the area. The hike in the canyon was slightly more difficult (minor incline/some climbing). I recommend bringing bug spray as there are a ton of mosquitos. Luckily my wife and I wore long sleeves so we weren’t bit too much.

After the canyon hike, Sumi took us to a small onsen town along Lake Shikotsu where we enjoyed lunch at a ramen place that served home made ramen and savory / buttery Hokkaido potatoes. Both dishes were very tasty and affordable!

End to end the journey was 6 hours long including the driving, but we left feeling extremely grateful to our guides and wish we could spend more time with them to learn about Lake Shikotsu and the area around it! Thank you so much, Sumi and Taki

Hell Valley was a truly awesome geothermal location with a lot to see, experience, and smell. There are several walking trails to various locations within the park. Some trails keep you nearest to the geothermal mountains while others take you through the forests. All the trails you'll need good shoes and be in decent health for because there are some narrow passes and a lot of up and down hill portions that could be slippery at times. Bring water and keep your phone charged for GPS purposes.
