Nice but not worth the price

It's 1000 to enter and another 400 to rent shorts to go outside. They're the only game in town and they know it. It was the most expensive and most ordinary onsen I visited.

Iwaobetsu Onsen Rotenburo was not open for summer season 2017
Sep 2017 • Couples
Unfortunately this rotenburo, operated by the hotel Chinohate, was closed in 2016 and did not reopen in 2017. When we went to visit in September 2017 we were told by the adjacent Kinoshita mountain hut that there is talk of the hotel reopening in 2018 under new ownership and that if this happens, the rotenburo may reopen as well. Check before you go. Visited 9/22/2017.

Not really for westerners but still good.

My fiancée and I went here one night to relax after the Five Lakes walk. There is almost no English (and by that I mean one sign in the entire place written in English). This is not a whinge, as I get that this is clearly more for locals, but just letting it be known... So here's some more advice: take 800Y each for admission, plus 200Y for one of their towels. Don't expect English as none of the staff speak English and it's not clear where you go, what you do, where you leave your shoes and what slippers you can use. There are no lockers in the Onsen rooms and the inside Onsen is pitiful compared to other beautiful ones we've been to. However, the outside onsens are quite lovely, and we really enjoyed being in them late at night - and they're mixed bathing! So ladies, don't be shy now. :-)

a nice free onsen in the middle of nature
Aug 2016 • Couples
We have been renting a car to travel around Hokkaido. This gives us a lot of freedom to drive from one place to another. We found the iwaobetsu onsen very easily as it was well indicated by a road sign. There are enough spots to park your car and a path that will lead you in two minutes to the hot pots. If you continue the path you will find another hot pot and a waterfall. Very nice!

Great stop after hiking
Aug 2014 • Couples
It is the begining and the end of the hike to Mt. Rausu. If you are doing that it is a greate way to end the hike by soaking in the hot water. There are 2 places to do it the first one had people soaking their feet but the second one just a short walk down the path is a small pool perfect for a couple and it is private. Me and my husband had great time relaxing after the hike.
Otherwise going their just for the rotenburo is not worth it in my opinion.
