About
Gaasbeek Castle is a unique historic house with an extensive collection that has grown organically with it. We are the permanent custodians of this piece of heritage. We present this house and its collection in a bold way as a heritage laboratory and inspiring place to meet. The castle is a ‘work in progress’: we develop systematic innovative initiatives which we share with the local heritage community and beyond. In so doing we put our visitors first: we excite, move and invite them to reflect. We work on an interdisciplinary basis and reach a collective vision of how to enhance art, heritage, nature, education and tourism. All this with attention to quality and maximum social relevance.

We were told that the Castle was opened, this is true. On arrival they told us all the furniture was still being restored and that they have placed a temporary exhibition with ‘interesting’ videos to complement the empty surroundings of the castle. That was the enormous letdown: the exposition felt zero connection to the castle. The videos were connected to the modern age, which completely took us out of the time we wanted to visit. There was an expedition of a modern day apartment: why? I can visit that anyday…
So conclusion: love this castle, but visit when furniture and audioguides have returned, which should be April 2024

Unfortunately the castle is closed for reconstruction, only park is accessible. It is just a small park but enjoyable for walk and relax after work. Without possibility to visit the castle it this place worth a visit if you are in the area but not a long traveling.

The Gaasbeek castle is just a few minutes away from Brussels by car (or by bus) and it has a nice museum, garden and park. It was rebuilt by a crazy & free-thinking lady in the 19th century with an idealised vision of the Middle Ages, so it's not the most "authentic" historical experience, but the visit is very well done. The museum staff is friendly, and the audio guide is well done (included in the 10 EUR adult ticket for the visit of the castle). The park is also very pleasant to have a walk afterwards. The castle accepts Sodexo vouchers (Chèques sport & culture).

A historical, fortified medieval castle which played a big role in the history of the Brussels Region. Later, when these kinds of castles lost their strategic importance it was transferred into a fantastic living-castle by the d'Arconati family. Situated in the heart of Breughel the elder's country. Submerge yourself in his paintings. Culinary fantastic - and believe me, I live here, I am a resident! So I make some promotion, yes.

Kasteel van Gaasbeek is a classic fairytale castle, about half an hour west of Brussels. As they did last summer, Cornish theatre company Wildworks have animated the cast with images, sounds, words and live characters. It brings the castle to life through the eyes of three historic figures associated with it...beautifully done - remains in place until November. Castle grounds are lovely too: Brueghelesque landscapes roll out from a viewing platform in the courtyard gardens.

We visited to see the new installation by English theatre company Wildworks, who had been tasked to bring the castle alive for visitors.
It is a wonderful canvas to work on. A fairy-tale castle in beautiful grounds, but the real fun started inside. With beautiful and imaginative installations in every room and a series of stories to lead you round, I spent about twice as long as I usually would in a heritage site. The staff and volunteers of the Castle are also part of the installation, quietly and unobtrusively adding to the unfolding stories.
This was an ambitious move to change the way we engage and interact with history and it totally worked for us!

This is one of the nicest castles around and definitely worth visiting. Forest is well maintained and very nice with the parks and ponds.

We had guests from the States here and I was looking for an afternoon outing close to Brussels and this did not disappoint. The castle grounds are lovely so be sure to plan enough time for a walk around. We got tickets for the castle and the gardens. The interior of the castle is interesting but not exactly according to the period of the castle but the commentary in English is very entertaining. The amazing thing is the garden. It is a garden museum so you see everything in various stages of growth. And I mean everything. We were in awe of the vegetables and fruits growing there - it takes 5 full time gardeners to mind the place. They give free tours on the weekends (not sure in what language though - we were speaking Dutch to the volunteer guide).

This is a lovely pace to visit I visited on a weekend to pass the time while working away from home at the weekend I am glad i did. The castle is lovely although it is under going restoration at the moment. The grounds and gardens are beautiful. If I was a resident of Brussels I would come here with my family for picnics at the weekends but as I am from the UK this is not practical It is a must visit if you are in Belgium.

The only problem I hade abot my visit was that for €12 a ticket, its quite expensive. Other than that this is a nice historic castle that is beautiful to look at with spectacular gardens and even the odd Peacock or two roaming about. Its huge inside and there is an exebition going on til November with pieces of art inpired by a knight theme (which goes down well showcased in a castle). I certainly recommend.

Can you see the outside of the castle if it is closed? I will be driving near there on a Monday when the museum is closed, but I'm thinking it might be worth stopping to see?

Hi, you mentioned in 2017 you visited the Kasteel van Gaasbeek in Belgium by bus. Which bus, and was it from Gare de Midi? Where would you get off the bus to walk to the castle? Is it a long walk? Thank you for your information and help. Be well.

I was with a local family. The castle is great. Try to get to Grote Dorst on Sunday morning if you are in the area.
