About
Tohoku’s premier ski resort, Aomori Spring sits on the Northern slopes of Mt Iwaki. A gondola takes you up through pristine beech forest to a height of 921 metres with stunning views of the Tsugaru Plain and the Sea of Japan. With world-class dry powder snow conditions, wide groomed trails and a number of steep off-piste pitches, there is plenty of terrain to keep your whole family satisfied. After dark you can enjoy night skiing/riding under the moonlight on one of our floodlit trails. For freestyle skiers and snowboarders there’s Olympic-sized 22 foot halfpipe, the largest in Japan, and an extensive terrain park which is open both day and night. Backcountry skiers will fall in love with the almost endless supply of pristine powder snow that Aomori has to offer. Facilities: Ski-in, ski-out Rockwood Hotel & Spa, 1 x 6seater gondola, 2 x covered high-speed four-seater chairlifts, 2 x two-seater chairlifts, rental shop, ski and snowboard lessons and on-mountain restaurants, and more!

We travelled to Aomori Spring Resort last month and had the opportunity to take part of a great snowboard freestyle camp that was being offered. The resort is about an hour from the train station. The rooms were adequately sized. We had a view of the gondola from our room and a view of the sea in the distance. The room was equipped with hot water kettle and green tea bags. The beds were very comfortable and we had a small sofa bed to relax on. The bathrooms were nice and water pressure was excellent. Even the toilet had a feature to warm the seat and even had a bidet feature! There is an onsen on the ground floor which is very convenient!! You can wear your yukata and just take the elevator down and walk a few feet to use the onset. There is separate onsen for men and women. It is very clean and there are 2 different pools one that is indoors and outside onsen. It is very nice to be out in the crisp cool outdoors soaking in a hot spring! What a great feeling to soak your weary and achy body after a full day of snowboarding/skiing! There is also a masseuse on duty and the prices are very reasonable. The eating facilities is buffet-style. You have breakfast and dinner there. There are plenty of Japanese and Western dishes available. They replenish often and there are very delicious and tasty. All you can eat snow crabs!! Need I say anymore. They also have delicious desserts, many of them featuring apples, since this is the area famous for the apple orchards. They seemed to vary the food for the 5 days that we were there. There is also a fancy French/Japanese style restaurant. It has 2 set menus and you also order a-la-carte items. You have to book a reservation 24 hours in advance as they prepare only those eating there. They also have a small cafe/bar that serves small snacks and alcohol. The bar was mostly empty the times we stop by. There is a ramen house that is open for lunch and is a great place to stop in-between runs to warm up and fill your stomach. Also there is the mountain cafe next to the gondola that is open until 5pm. There is no other place to get food so those are your only options. The snowboard/ski rental is located in the basement. They also have lockers for you to use during your stay to keep all your gear in. The snowboard freestyle camp was awesome. We had Sam as our instructor (from Australia) for the 3 day camp. We were the only ones in the camp so it was like having private lessons. We did mostly half-pipe training and terrain park. Aomori has an Olympic sized 22 foot half-pipe! And an all-levels terrain park. The slopes seemed empty and we never had to wait in a queue for the gondola or lifts. It was amazing. The powder is something that everyone should experience! Sam took video for us so we had instant feedback. He was very patient with us and we had a great time learning new tricks and tips. Aomori also offers night-skiing on a few runs. The staff was very attentive and friendly. There were enough that spoke English so there wasn't any difficulty. There is also a karoke room for rent if you are into that. Overall, we would highly recommend this resort. We will definitely come back next season! We had a lot of fun and learned alot.

This place was amazing! Something for everyone. If you aren't into skiing or boarding there are other options: Massages, karaoke, onsen a bar and restaurant. I had a blast and will be back. The runs are excellent for beginners or experienced boarders.

First time skiing at Northeast part of Japan. Normally we go Niseko in Hokkaido or Nagano area, so going to Northeast region is a brand new experience for us. We took domestic flight from Tokyo to Aomori, which is about an hour. After landed, it took another hour to Aomori Spring ski resort.
The resort has become famous as Team USA was there for practice before heading to the Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics last year. This is considered a mid size with 14 courses - 1 gondola and 5 chairlifts (incl one hooded 4-seaters). First day on slope was Dec 19th 2018 where it was just opened for 4 days, only Paradise Course, Sunshine Course and upper part of Aspen Connector were opened, then, a few more opened on Dec 21st with night ski. If you choose to stay at Aomori Spring hotel, it's definitely a ski in ski out hotel, so it's really convenient!
Courses are easy, wide with powder snow even it was the beginning of the season. It is definitely good for beginners or those who want to practice surface tricks. No specific area for snow park but kickers were built on Sunshine Course and a half pipe also located at bottom of The Link; however, it's still work-in-progress during our stay.
Day pass including night ski until 9pm. The pass is in paper form hence you have to show the crew before you get on the lifts/gondola.
Very limited choices in terms of food, restaurants only located at bottom of the slopes. They are 2 bases - Gondola base and Hooded chairlift base, both spots have restaurants / simple food. A foodcourt is located at Gondola base and a ramen house is on the other base. Well, of course you can go back to hotel for it.

Aomori Springs – Like Our Own Private Ski Resort
As the assistant coach for the US Halfpipe Ski Team, I’ve traveled to some of the best ski resorts in the world, but Aomori Springs stands out as a truly magical place. It felt like we had our own private ski resort—no crowds, no lift lines, just endless laps on perfect terrain with deep powder plus a world-class halfpipe.
Halfpipe & Terrain – Elite-Level Training
The halfpipe at Aomori Springs is one of the best-kept secrets in Japan. The shape and maintenance were on point, making it ideal for both progression and high-level tricks. The terrain park was also top-notch, with a variety of jumps, rails, and fun features.
Powder & Ski Touring – A Hidden Gem
We were blown away by the quality and quantity of powder here. Aomori Springs gets hammered with snow, and with so few people on the mountain, we were able to find fresh tracks all day. The ski touring options were next-level, offering untouched backcountry lines with breathtaking views.
Guiding with an Olympic Champion
One of the biggest highlights was having Kaitlyn Farrington, Olympic gold medalist, as our guide, provided by Aomori Springs, which was a pleasant surprise. Her knowledge of the terrain, combined with her energy and passion for the sport, made the experience unforgettable. She took us to hidden stashes and some of the best tree runs we’ve ever skied.
Accommodation & Onsen – The Ultimate Recovery
We stayed at the Rockwood Hotel & Spa, which made everything incredibly easy. The rooms were comfortable, and the ski-in/ski-out access was a huge plus. After long training days, and not getting back to the hotel until 4:30pm, soaking in the onsen with views of the city and ocean was the perfect way to relax and recover.
Food & Après – Ramen, Drinks & Good Times
The food scene here was spot on. The Ramen House was exactly what we needed during big days on the hill—rich, flavorful, and satisfying. The hotel restaurant had a great mix of Japanese and Western options, and après-ski activities like karaoke and playing pool made for some fun team bonding.
A Must Re-Visit Resort
Aomori Springs is a hidden gem with incredible snow, terrain, and a relaxed, uncrowded vibe. Whether you’re a freestyle skier, a backcountry explorer, or just looking for a unique ski experience, this resort is unbeatable. Having Kaitlyn Farrington as our guide was the cherry on top.

Hi, any idea if they still offer night ski ?

Hello, My wife and I no longer downhill ski, but we love Nordic (cross-country) skiing, especially on prepared (groomed) trails. Does the ski resort have what we in America and Europe call a "Nordic ski" center? Thanks, Dean and Connie

Thanks for your enquiry. Yes, there are cross country skis for hire at the resort and a groomed area on the golf course about 2km in total, adjacent to the Rockwood Hotel & Spa where you can cross country ski. The trail is free to access. The trail is not always groomed daily so you need to enquire about conditions closer to the time of your arrival. Also, the trail is a regular groomed track, not with the 'grooves' cut into the snow. I have used the trail several times myself and it is lovely!
