We set out on this path yesterday, but in cloud and with no views and hardly any visibility. As Mount Asahidake was clearly visible from the base ropeway station today, we decided to give it a second go. This time we had beautiful views all the way and had an excellent walk. It is a good idea to have the trekking map, which they sell for ¥700 at the visitors centre in Asahidske visitors centre, although the path is easy to follow. There are wooden walkways over particularly wet ground, although these weren't in an especially good state of repair. Most of the route to Susoaidairabunki is fairly gentle, although it can be rocky or wet and in July it was necessary to walk across five small glaciers. Luckily the snow was crunchy, so it wasn't too slippery. After about an hour and a half, there is a choice of paths, the one on the right takes you to Nakadake Onsen, but we didn't quite make it that far. The Susoaidaira walk is highly recommended for those who don't fancy the steep climb up Mount Asahidake. The truly adventurous and fit could walk in a bit loop, including the climb, but that would take a full day. …

The Susoaidaira plateau is easily accessible from the upper ropeway station. Its trails are flatish and do not require climbing gear. One of them leads to a small hot spring, two hours away from the ropeway station. The Autumn colors there are spectacular.
