Beautiful 19th century warship sank off Esashi in 1868. This replica was built on the original plans and houses artifacts that were pulled out of the sea: guns, spoons, shoes and coins. It's a lovely place to walk on a sunny day and below decks you can try on old costumes. But....there is hardly any English/foreign language information on site (as of 2015), so all the display panels and exhibits are not so interesting.

The Kaiyo Maru is a salvaged Shogunate warship that was sunk off the coast of Esashi in 1868. It has been well restored. If you travel to the island of Hokkaido, Japan, a trip to the old herring village of Esashi is well worth the effort. We saw a performance of traditional song (Esashi Oiwake) and dance it was very interesting. We went to Esashi on a tour from a Princess cruise ship.

Nice facsimile, looks good in the photos, but would sorely disappoint the marine historian. There are exhibits inside however we didn't go in as there were exhibits on display in he visitors centre which were enough to satisfy our curiosity.
