Took a day trip from Hakodate to Onuma koen. Journey took approx. 30min via the JR train and we approached the tourist information centre upon arrival for more info. The centre guide shared with us the 2 possible routes which we could visit and we were soon off to the lakes which was about a 15min walk away from the JR station. The first lake which we strolled along was amazing as there were several mini islands connected by bridges of different architecture and we witnessed the sight of the lake frozen during the winter season. We stopped along the way for a meal at the a restaurant which served

Great for photo-taking, throwing and making snowballs, snowman and having a good family fun time. Not sure how it looks during summer or other seasons, but winter was truly scenic and soothing for the soul.

One of the best place to reflect on life's blessing due to the tranquil environment. If you are into photography, the lake's so placid that you can find many chance to take "mirror" shots of the surroundings using the placid lake surfaces.

After lunch nearby, we went to the Onūma Quasi-National Park to have a nice stroll. The view of the mountain is really exhilarating due to its beauty. Took a lot of pictures of the mountain. If the volcano did not erupt, it could be as beautiful as Mount Fuji.

For person connected to nature this is a great place, not over exploited like many. You can casually walk around the lake and enjoy solitude and nature.

There are boar rides available to cruise around the lake and view the many islands.

There is an excellent view available of an extinct volcano which occured in recent times.

Row boats etc are availble for hire. Enjoy a picnic lunch.

Onuma Quasi National Park is the most frequently visited scenic parks outside of Hakodate and the first quasi national park in Hokkaido. A local JR line with fare of 540 yens one way from JR Hakodate to JR Onumakoen takes approx. 40 min. It is also a stop-over station served by JR’s Limited Express Super Hokuto to and from Sapporo. There are lockers available inside of the station if you choose to visit it on your way to Sapporo or Hakodate.
The dormant volcano mountain Komagatake with its distinctive peak takes the center stage in this landscaped park. It comes to the visitors’ views from many directions when strolling around the picturesque lakes, isles, and bridges. The best time of the day to visit is in the mid afternoon when sun is at the perfect position shining from the west towards the face of Komagatake Mountain and on the lake’s surface reflecting the symmetrical images of the surrounding objects. Visitors have several choices of walking routes depends on the time available. The seven islands hoping trail “Shimameguri-no-Michi” is the shortest route. Leisure strolls on this route take approx. 2 hours following seven sequentially numbered posts. At the Lake Onuma there are several tiny islands dotted around the peninsula. Islands are connected by steel or stone bridges of various shapes, each has its name and the year was built. The lake front area on Oshima Island gives visitors the best views of Komagatake Mountain with its iconic pointy peak. The walking trails are fairly easy to take but not all are wheelchair accessible. The best seasons to visit the park are summer when vibrant flowers are in full blossom and autumn when foliages show off their fire red and warm orange colors. Bike rentals and lake cruising boats are available during the tourist season. To get to Onumakoen from Hakodate, take JR Hakodate Line local trains for 540 yens one way. Be sure to check the return train schedules if you take the day trip since there aren’t many local trains available for this route; you may have to pay the higher fares for more frequent Limited Express trains to get back to Hakodate.

There are lots of things to do on and around Onuma Lake and it's a real shame that it was grey and rainy when we came here. We first went on one of the sightseeing boats to go around the lake, but didn't find it that exciting as they were announcing everything in Japanese only. Afterwards we went on a walking trail that leads you through and around the lake over various bridges and past small islands with great photo opportunities. If the weather would have been nicer we would have spent much more time here renting a boat to go paddling. This is a great place to come to with your family.

This is a quiet, mostly overlooked but very scenic spot good for a nice walk or long bike ride (rentals available) just a ten minute train ride out of the touristy Hakodate. Accommodations available and several decent eateries nearby. We visited a ramen shop going straight ahead out of the station, and to the left at the first traffic light. On the far side of the intersection. Tiny, totally local in flavor and offering everything from grilled local fish to soba, ramen and more. Mom and pop cook/owners. No frills but very, very local in character as opposed to the more outwardly touristic places nearby. Excellent.
