We arrived fairly early so there were lockers available to store our luggage for our half day excursion. Then a short wait for the small bus to the top.

Shurakawago observatory is located on top of mountain and is walkable distance from the town. Observatory provides some amazing views of the village with sunset in the background. Their is a small cafe on top and some small counters which serve traditional food items, surely...More

Took a tour. First stop is on top of the hill to get an overall view of the village. Fantastic. I can imagine how it looks in snow covered winter. Walk in the village with a guide is best as they describe the surroundings and...More

Come here in the morning, early morning is the best as it gets very crowded and cramped in the afternoon. Either drive up (do go up the right hill), or walk up, for about 20mins, (30 min round trip)

Get the Village map from the information counter when you reach the bus station. Walking uphill required to reach the desination about 20mins. Not recommended for those have leg problem

There is a shuttle bus every 20 minutes from the village, and we’d recommend the bus up, and walk down. The walk is fairly steep, on a sealed country road, but the road up is boring. Get it over with quickly! There are good toilets...More

Once at Shirakawago going to this observation level is a must. The walk is not hard and the views are terrific.

Good starting off place to visit before visiting the main village to gain perspective of this site. As it is about 40-50m above the village, the observatory gives you a rather good perspective of the place . Good for a 15 minute visit before proceeding...More

Stunning photo opportunities. You’ll never forget this view. Then head down into the village to wander around.

Our tour bus stopped at the observatory deck before going down to the village. 80 mins is not enough. We were given 2 hours and it still wasn’t enough. They do have overnight stays for 10000 Yen. I didn’t know that at that... More

I don't think you can catch the shuttle after check-in and also it will be a bit dark after 4.30 pm for photo-shooting during the spring months. Nonetheless, it is absolutely safe and easy to walk uphill to the Observatory... More
