If you visit Shirakawago, it is a must to situate yourself in the Shiroyama Observatory Deck. Where else can you get a glimpse of that iconic and immaculate village with thatched roofs pre-industrialized Japan? It is a UNESCo World Heritage no doubt. Although it seems to be fast becoming known, I hope it remains to its essence as a village... More

The observation deck provided a great view of the village with the traditional houses. It was definitely worth the bus ride up and down the hill.

If you visit Shirakawa-go, the observatory is a must-go place. You can overview the village and take signature photos. You may take shuttle (200 yen) or do some hiking.

It takes over 15 minutes to walk up but it worth the exercise. Be careful if you come down the rocky path. Although it is faster, but it is steeper and with loose rocks...

It's a nice little ancient village and there's old houses that you can visit by paying a fee. Some restaurants or cafes are also located in the old houses. We went there during summer and was very quiet but do try to be there in the morning as there will be more tourist groups in the afternoon stopping over here.

The view from the observation deck is stunning - we couldn't believe how picturesque the scenery could be. You only need 10mins and its worth a visit.

What a beautiful village set in the mountains of Japan. Worth seeing there is another side to Japan than big cities.

Shirakawago is one of my dream place that I determine to visit at least once in my life. I visited there in January which was very cold and covered all over the place with white snow. Especially when you looked down from the Observatory Deck, the whole village looked like a miniature. The rooftop of the house is a landmark... More

It takes 15-20 min walk from the village to the mountain. Great view of the whole village there. BEAUTIFUL! A good spot for photos and selfies :) The village is so peaceful and quiet. If you have time, should stay there for a night.

From Shiroyama, you can take a look of a ogimachi village, which is registered as a world cultural heritage for their old Gasho style houses. The view from this observatory deck is just like a painting. It is like a fairy world. It is absolutely worth visiting, even if you change your itinerary.
