I have been there in last autumn; it was impeccable time to visit this amazing village surrounded by mountains and divided by a river. It felt amazing just to gaze upon the scenery.

We came here for a half-day trip, driving from Takayama city (should not take more than an hour). The autumn view and scenery for this lovely village is beautiful.

Tourist volume is still acceptable as we're here on Tuesday, and also because this site is big enough for tourists to be spread out.

Take your time to explore the village, observation point and various scenic areas overlooking the river.

Can be cold in late autumn with wind and rain. I can imagine winter will be much colder but with different beauty.

Overall love this site.

What a fascinating location. This experience is a must for those who value old world cultural heritage. After an enjoyable drive through the Japanese country side you arrive at this historic location. The initial walk over the concrete suspension bridge takes you into this incredible village (still occupied by residents). Old houses, rice fields, vegetable patches enveloped by the surrounding green forest ensure a pleasant sensory experience. Walking around this village you get a sense of how dependant these people are on what mother nature has provided them - pristine environment, crystal clear water supply and rich fertile soil. There is a variety of restaurants open offering a variety of food dishes. A most enjoyable walk on the village paths takes you close to the homes of the residents. An uplifting experience, and one, if time permits, is worth the drive to this location.

I have not seen such a village before and it is well worth a visit. You can walk across the river from the car park and through the village to the Wada family house to see the style of construction and to get a sense of how the people lived here. There is also a car parking place in the hills above the village with a viewpoint overlooking the overall site.

Shirakawa is a village located in Ōno District, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It is best known for being the site of Shirakawa-gō, a small, traditional village showcasing a building style known as gasshō-zukuri.

When I was there, it 11am on Jan 30, 2017. It was raining. But heavy snow a few days ago. The pavement was narrower because both sides of the pavement were packed with heavy snow. The floor was quite slippery when it rains especially when snow fell the previously night.

If you come from a country that never snow, I recommend you to have a full weather forecast before starting your trip.
Snow can be tricky. When it melted and turned to ice, it is be really slippery. I recommend go to the local convenience store, Lawson or 7-11 to purchase a pair or snow scratcher. It is worn on the outside of your shoes to prevent slippery. It is like a rubberband with spikes.

This is a very beautiful UNESCO site, however, the parking facilities is not well designed to cater for the mass tourists. Best to visit during non-festive season.

We went one day before the new emperor's enthronement public holiday in Oct 2019. There are tones of tour buses and cars that are all jammed up in the single lane entrance to the village for a long time. We've managed to turnaround with google map's help, however, other than the designated parking lots we are not able to park anywhere in the village except for pit-stop at the public toilet. We did however took some nice picture but not able to fully explore the place or walk around.
