There are several attractions including the tours of the wetlands, the river tour and the visit to the Hacienda. The building has been very well restored and serves as a Quality restaurant with attractive views to the surrounding landscape. Adjacent to the hacienda is an active display of the traditional methods of producing sugar from the sugar cane. An ox... More

Celebrating special birthday so trying all tours is a mission as there are so many but this one really impressed as we had great start to day here in El Viejo being introduced to traditional and historic farming at sugar cane plantation only to be whisked onto the river nearby and immediately saw crocodiles, monkeys, macaws, iguanas and turtles galore.... We arrived a little before 9am. It took longer than we expected, due to 16km on dirt/gravel. The place is beautiful and the guides extremely knowledgeable. Kevyn even helped us with our Spanish. We saw a lot of wildlife on the boat tour, including crocs and monkeys. The cultural tasting was awesome as well and I would recommend it highly.... More

My wife and I took our 4 and 6 year old girls on this tour. Was booked by concierge when we requested Palo Verde boat tour but ended up being great day. A little difficult to find on some rough roads but you arrive at beautiful Hacienda and are treated with light breakfast of coffee, juices and fruit. After driving... More

Everything was perfect for our day trip to El Viejo Wetlands! We opted for their package that included transportation and was picked up on time. Our hospitable driver pointed out sites on the way and pulled over when he spotted some monkeys in the trees. The grounds of this Plantation is beautiful! Well manicured with paths, fountains, lovely buildings and... More

I really did not expect to arrive to such a beautiful place. They welcome the guests with fruit and coffee. I took my morning coffee with the most beautiful view. The Hacienda was owned by Anastasio Somoza (former president of Nicaragua), so the place has some interesting history. We took the boat tour that is very nice and different from... More

We were welcomed at the Casona with coffee, fruitdrinks and fresh fruit, before heading out to the boat with our guide Kevin (great guide). Although the water level was low (tide out and El Niño drought), the guide was able to show us the various locations of the nesting crocodiles, tons of iguanas, a troup of Capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys... We booked on line while in Costa Rica. We went for the 11am boat tour of the Rio Tempisque and there were just four people on the boat. We saw lots of animals, well pointed out by the guide and skipper - without them we wouldn't have seen half of what we did. Big crocs, capucin monkeys, howler monkeys, lots... More

Our group's Guanacaste trip over Christmas 2015 was mainly a time of relaxation at the beach, so we looked forward to seeing some animals and experiencing Costa Rican culture at El Viejo Wetlands the day before we flew home. The daylong visit exceeded our expectations, and we were so glad we decided to visit. We three couples drove ourselves from... More
