A well maintained lock system amid beautiful countryside but close to Marple village and public houses. Well worth a walk.

Recent renovation work on gates and retaining walls is now complete with added picnic areas and cleaned up water reveals lots of wildlife and the fisher men are back. It is so relaxing to walk in peaceful surroundings where people say 'Hello' as you pass them. Marple Town centre is just... More

Always a great day out at Marple Locks. To get there by bike from Manchester or Stockport is a joy and so easy. There a huge playing field a few feet away so the kids can play while mum and dad can relax and watch the work and boats go by. Summers are mad of lazy days like this.

My sister used to live in Marple and introduced me to the pleasures of a walk along and near the locks. It is quite steep so may be unsuitable for some.

This series of canal locks is the steepest on the planet, somewhat making it a more strenuous walk than you'd normally experience. Perfect for keeping fit and taking photos of the spectacular surrounding countryside.
